Let's Do Some Fishing Of Swiftlet In Your BH !!!

(My Idea of Fishing of Swiftlet is to locate their favourite spots and lay as many fake nests as possible .  Spray your favourite pheromone on these fake nests.) 

Can any one tell me how to fish swiftlet?

I am sure you will be saying that I am a joker.

However I recently come out with this interesting idea which I think you might want to consider or perhaps follow my interesting idea.

This crazy swiftlet fishing idea came out during my revamp operation of Parit Buntar BH.

My workers and me took about 6.5 days to complete the straight forward renovation.

During the final few days of the operation that I asked my workers to carry out night inspection inside the VIP rooms so that I can roughly know where those swiftlet prefer to stay.

Well what I did during this trial period was to play one of my favourite external sound after we stop work for the day i.e after 6:00pm until 9:00pm.

The internal sound was also my super favourite the Superbabyking.

My intention was to evaluate if those birds have difficulties in entering the new design and which area do they like the most.

I believed with the new flight orientation they will have some spots which will become their favourite area to stay.

On the the first day of the test, my worker reported that there were about 8 birds staying and most of them stayed together at one location.

The second night the number went up to 14 birds and they still stay nearly the same spot where there was one single nest with a grown up baby.

I took a closer look at the precise location and check the number of bird shit on the floor (picture attached)

There was no doubt about it and inside my mind I told myself to do something to force them to stay there forever but with their nests.

I needed a plan to push them to stay and this was what came to my mind.

If there is something that will attract them it shall be either those pheromone or fake nests or both.

My final plan was to use both. The fake nests plus those special pheromone.

I still have a pack of those aluminium fake nests and a bottle of the Super Pheromone.

Quietly I climb the ladder and started the installation of all the aluminium fake nests and later spray all with the super pheromone.

I have a strong feeling this will work.

The only way is to know if this fishing operation works is to wait until my next visit.

If this fishing idea works I would suggest that all of you out there should try this marvellous idea.

Yes you can fish them to immediately be your tenant.

My fishing idea is nothing more than look for those spots that they love to stay and quickly lay some kind of bait to get them to "Bite".  The word " bite" means they will quickly build their nests and lay an egg.

Once they lay one egg they will be your permanent tenant forever.

The very interesting about using fake nest is that the young couple can shorten their building of nest time.

Once they have found the fake nest (ready to receive eggs) the male can persuade his lady partner to start the mating process.  Once mated she will lay her eggs within 8 days.

I might be wrong but what if I am right?

Another Interesting Tree With The Power Of Pulling Swiftlet !!!

While waiting for the gate to open I took a short trip along the Jalan Sungai at Parit Buntar Perak.

It was on August 12, 2012 early morning about 8:00am.

What I was trying to look out for was any activities that are related to those swiftlet in the area.

The small road was running beside a 100 feet wide river and there were a number of tall trees.

Among the many interesting observations were two strange things.

Two special trees that attract many swiftlet above both of them.

The fist tree was inside a deep swampy area and I could not go nearer.

However this second tree is interesting and closed to the road which I was driving.

I took some photos and video clips that tell you a bit about the activities and the tree.

From far the tree looks very normal but the number of swiftlet flying above and around it is so strange.

I went closer and filmed the activities at a closer range.

I did ask two elderly ladies that was sweeping their house yard.

They claimed that the tree is called Jejawi.  A very strange name.

I went closer to look at the trunk and I think the tree name should be a "Strangler".

It seems that this tree was strangling an old Palm Oil tree to death.

When young it must have be growing on the palm oil tree bark and once those long roots reached the ground they can be nasty.

Confirmed with little doubt that the palm oil tree is inside the strangler tree roots.

Parit Buntar BH Job Done And Reactivated !!!

Just 6.5 days and the reactivation went smoothly with very little hiccup.

The owner seems to be very happy with what I did and the best is to see more birds entering the two entrance holes.

I told him to stay away from entering his BH for at least two to three months.

The best is to wait for my next inspection.

( After Revamping Works With Proper Sound System)

The list of things that I did for this BH were the followings:

1) Opened the two entrance holes and make both taller and wider.

1A) Installed a hexagonal tweeter with five 2"x5" piezo tweeters about 1.5 feet above the monkey house roof.

2) Installed a new set of external sound tweeters on the entrance holes frames.  This time four on each but arranged at the side frames.

3) Installed a 5 foot bazooka tweeters.  Main objective was to direct the external sound to the birds flying path.

4) Installed my favourite last tango external sound gadget complete with about 12 power tweeters around the monkey house.

5) Reduce the size of the roving area just below the monkey house.

6) Open a new entrance window connecting the roving to the nesting room.

7) Erected a number of partitions to block those bright light from polluting the nesting room.

8) Installed about 300 internal sound tweeters and most were turned as clusters.

9) Installed about 180 fake nests made of gel, aluminium and styrofoam.

10) Create more 90* corners using wood crossings.  Total footage of additional wood was about 250 feet.

11) Installed an auto humidity sensor controlling two chicken coop humidifiers.

12) There were three chandelier tweeters plus three kite tweeters.

13) Installed those perfume containers on the walls of the nesting room.

14) The rooms were sprayed with Mutiara Aroma home made cocktail.

15) Selected the best sound for the BH and three of the best were identified.

16) The BH internal sound were selected too.

17) Allocated a reasonable number of external sound tweeters to pull those swiftlet into the nesting room as soon as they entered the monkey house.

18) All fake nests were laced with specialized aroma to make them smell attractive to swiftlet.

19) For external sound a new solid state amplifier was installed.

20) A cooling fan was made available to cool the amplifiers.

21) Two white light bulbs were also installed closed to the two entrance hole.

22) The walls were painted black to block light from polluting the rooms.

All the above were planned prior to doing the renovation.

They looks simple but it takes a lot of dedication to find the right solution in pulling those swiftlet from the sky into the monkey house and lead them into the nesting room.

My next plan is to get the owner to agree in opening the roof for dual entries system.

He is not very convince that it will work but I told him to trust my words.

"Mr Lee you should be proud of having this BH.  I have done the very best and I can easily says that it is the best in Parit Buntar.  I mean the interior fittings.  Give about 12 months and I think you will have at least 30 nests." I assured him.

I promised to do my inspection once a month help him in carrying out his maintainence for next 6 months.

My Wish For This Parit Buntar BH !!!

The shape of this Parit Buntar BH is almost the same at the BH I erected in Karak, Pahang.

The Karak BH was designed to have two types of entries, the side (monkey house) and top entry.

With the success recorded at Karak, I wish I could turn the Parit Buntar to a Dual entries BH.

The only problem is how to convince the owner of this BH to allow me to do what I think is the best for his BH.

I know that he is tight but I need to prove that the dual entries is a brilliant idea.

My only option now is to concentrate in pulling all those birds only to the top most floor.

Let me show him good result and once proven I can talk to him about populating the middle floor.

Most people have very little faith in anything you do and the only way out is to show him the result as we go along.

I am sure once I gain his confident he will say: "Go ahead with your idea Pak Harry, money is not the problem."

He was very lucky to have engaged me as his contractor because I know I am not the type of person who slaughter his customer.

What I want is to prove that what I am doing is to reactivate his dead BH.

I am sure one day he will realized that my dedication and commitment to help him will be accepted and appreciated.

New Version Of Solid State Amplifier Made in Malaysia !!!

The inventor of solid state BH sound amplifier called me to see if I can carry out some serious test on his newly invented amplifier.

"Pak Harry, I have this new set of amplifier that can run both the external and internal sounds in one box.  I have two external ports and four ports for internal sounds.  The nice thing about this unit is that it call play WAV sound format which is similar to CD quality clarity.  Please have a unit and try it out.  Its on me."

This morning received the items and was looking at this very unit box that will greatly helps swiftlet farmers.

I am very fortunate to be trusted by some one that I have never met and only spoke on the mobile phone.

This new amplifier gives its user a higher advantages.

It is compact and there is no need to run multiple amplifiers.  Currently every BH will have at least a set of amplifiers (two for external and two for the internal sounds).  We normally used those Karaoke sets that are bulky and space consuming.

With this new amplifier you need only a space of about 10"x5"x5".  It can play both your external and internal sound on one amplifier.

The sound can be loaded using either USB thumb drive or SD card.

The inventor stressed on the amplifier ability to read WAV sound formats that he claimed to be CD quality clarity that is much better than MP3 sounds formats.

A very interesting new development in swiftlet farming history.

I am for it and willing to use this new technology on all my new BHs that I will be involved in.

Trong Eco Park, Perak

A brand new Swiftlet Eco Park in Trong, Perak.

After two years the project was finally approved by the Local Council.

The point here is that the developer finally got his project approved.

Right now the biggest task is to get enough buyers to kick start the project.

If you are a positive thinking type of person you might want to consider owning one of these units.

1) By September 20th, 2012 the Government to Government protocol will be signed in China.  This might be the date that all Malaysian swiftlet farmers are looking forward for a back to normal situation.

2) Shop houses are no longer allowed to be converted to BH effective May 2011.  Those who go against the ruling will have a tough time with the local council.

3) All BHs that are currently located in shop houses (not approved to be listed as swiftlet farming project) will be required to move out given about 3-5 years of time frame subject to the area and local authorities enforcement department.

4) There are not many Eco farm projects that are sanctioned by the local authorities or state. This is something that will make many current swiftlet farmers fuming if they are asked to vacate their swiftlet farming in town areas. In the vicinity of Taiping, Perak there is none so far (based on in put given by Trong Eco park developer).

5) Those who are smart and strongly believed that swiftlet farming is the best long term investment should look at Swiftlet Eco Park as the best alternative.

6) Most important is to have a fully committed developer who have a proper technical back up from a well known and experience swiftlet farmer.

Parit Buntar BH Began With A Bang !!!

The hacking of a new window about 3 feet by 6 feet started with a big bang.

The moment we started the owner looks worried that we will spoil his expensive BH.

"Ah Lee don't worry we know what we are doing and we are here to get those swiftlet into your BH."  I told him.

He smiled and said: "Okay Mr Harry I leave this BH in your good hand.  Please do what ever best for my BH. I trust you."

I assured him that once finished the BH will have a new lease of life and maybe if everything goes well he will have about 30 -50 nests within 10-12 months.

My sixth sense told me that I need to whack a new connecting door as my first step.

This totally new window will cut short the flying path from the entrance window into the roving and into the nesting room by half the normal distance.

All these while those birds that entered the monkey house could not find the connecting door thus they will only leave their bird shit marks on the roving walls and zoom off.

My second was the main entrance hole.  I wanted it to be larger to.

Current size was only about 2 feet by 2.5 feet.  I prefer it to be about 3 feet by 4 feet.

Main reason being those additional space will allow the installation of wood frame and 6 tweeters.

The gap between the two corresponding tweeters will be wide enough for three birds to enter at one time side by side.

Due to heavy wind I also came to a conclusion was to make the secondary entrance hole longer (side way).

By doing so those birds can have better time to manurvour into the monkey house even with a heavy wind blowing from the west.

They will fight the wind speed and when appropriate they will swerve into the hole.  The old size 2 feet X 2.5 feet was way to small.

Now the hole is about 5 feet long and 2.5 feet wide.  Much easier to manurvour as compared to before this.

A very interesting challenge and I am sure once ready this BH will show tremendous improvement.

Avery BH that I attended to have some generic problems and I think once we got used to the different environment you will find that there is a way around it.

After 40 Days Those Fruit Flies Soup Are Still Fresh & Working !!!

At first I though after 40 days those dried up insects soup were no longer useful.

What I did was to throw them into a container with served as a waste bin.

To make it moist I poured some plain water into it.

Never though that the dried up soup can still produce lots of insects maggots.

Just yesterday I took some pictures to examine their behaviour.

If we zoom onto these digital pictures you can actually see them eating their food with their head downward.

You might see some crawling around but those that were busy feasting on those fermented soup were shown only as a small dot.

Very interesting and something new to learn.

The lesson from this personal experience is not to throw away those so called used food.

They are still delicious to those maggots.

Put them into containers and wet them up.

Let those maggots do their work to clear up the bowl.
