Somewhere At An Orchard In Raub, Pahang !!!

This very simple BH is somewhere near to Raub Golf Course and with more than 1000 nests.

The proud owner met me during my recent trip to Tanjung Besar, Kuala Lipis, Pahang.

During the short visit I discovered a few very interesting things that I wish to share with all.

1) According to the owner he was not doing well during the first year of his BH operation.  It was mainly due to lack of knowledge and very little gadgets installed.

2) He showed me the seminar manual that he collected during the occasion and I was very happy that it was by me, Pak Harry.  The seminar he attended was held in Lumut Holiday Resort in year 2011.

3) After the seminar he modified his BH with all the ideas gathered and used all those strange techniques tough during the seminar.

4) He installed a lot of tweeters.  He got those single, kite, chandelier and hexagonal tweeters.  There were almost 1000 tweeters plus.

5) One very effective gadget that he used was those Styrofoam fake nests.  He has almost 500 per floor.  What I saw was that nearly all, 80%,  of these fake nests were with nest.

6) He also applied my teaching about those perfume garden bottles.  He recently used bamboo bottles which he claimed to be free and very easy to make and installed.

7)  I asked him about how many sounds he is currently using.  His answer was 5. What?  He reaffirmed again 5.  Two external sounds and three internal sounds.

8) His favorite internal sounds were the superbabyking, Pukau and NBU.  All the three runs on a 24 hours basis.

9) The two external sound that he is currently using were the Kpop and Super 208.  He changed his external sounds every 2 weeks.

10) One very strange thing that he did was to install the external sound tweeters all around his BH.  The north, south, east and west.  All the four were making the sound calling any birds around it to stop and visit his BH.

11) To cool his BH, the outside walls were lined with plywood.  Genius method of keeping those hot sun from hitting the cement walls directly.

12) His only entrance hole was facing the East.  He told me that he followed by advise closely.

He was very happy to have Pak Harry to stop over and told him what improvements that can be done.

I listed a few ideas and asked him to implement them during the next breeding cycle.

I might want him to try the use of the 3X super pheromone liquid soon.

This DIY bh was something that turned to be what it is now just because he sort ideas from Pak Harry and all his current internal and external sounds were from the same person.

I am very very happy for him and I will try to continue giving him more ideas on how to push his nests population to perhaps 3000 nests.

You all should learn from this BH owner.

A new set of eggs collected and under incubation !!!

During the earlier incubation operation we lost all the hatched babies.

This time around about 200 eggs were brought into our incubation center for hatching and breeding.

I am keeping my fingers crossed and this time around the final result will help the industry with the SOP (standard operating procedure) on how to breed swiftlet.

This project is undertaken with the collaboration in a local agricultural university.

I will be monitoring the breeding progress and hopefully within the next 40-60 days I will be able to release some of the matured birds in a BH located somewhere at Dengkil.

I will be very happy to share the SOP with those who are having problems with BH nest population.

The cost of this SOP will be based on how much you are willing to donate for more eggs to be incubated and breed.

Minimum is RM 50 and if you can contribute more please do so.

The cost per egg is about RM 1:50 and we need a minimum of 200 per batch.

The money donated shall be used for the purpose of purchasing the eggs.

The rest of the cost (food, labor and etc) will be borne by the local University.

I hope one day once the SOP is available and proven we can proceed with the birds breeding and releasing them into our BHs.

Let us pray hard that this new method will become something very common in Malaysia.

It will no longer be a secret and maybe we can easily source the food suitable for these young chicks.

A New Tasks Comes With New Challenges !!!

The owner of these two BHs met me yesterday and signed a simple JV agreement for me to look after them.

He owned one more that I told him to wait until I am ready.

I was reluctant due to its distance from Kuala Lumpur but ....

Well since he insisted I took it as a challenge to revamp it and put all those new ideas that I know will work well.

The first two will do for the moment.

I plan to consider the third unit once these two are populated.

Current number of nests for each is below 20 and I hope to hit 100 ++ by 12 months.

There are lots of errors inside and currently looking at each BH and how to resolve them.

By end of the month might ferry my workers to revamp both.

Starting Revamp Works At Kg Pacitan, N9.

After 10 days at Lukut, I moved my workers to a new site.

This time the place is called Kg Pacitan, Bukit Pelanduk, Negeri Sembilan.

A very small BH about 20 feet width and 30 feet long about two stories high.

From day one this BH was a disaster, according to the BH owner.

After almost 1.5 years with not a single bird shit spot, they gave up and decided to call UPM for help.

Once inspected by UPM, I was given the task to review the BH and come out with the best recommendations on what to do.

I remembered writing a report about 20 pages.

My report indicated the following faults:

1) The BH was a bit too small.  The size makes it very difficult to block those bright lights.

2) The BH was too closed to those high voltage power cables.  There is a very strong magnetic field that might not be suitable for birds navigation.

3) The BH walls were not a double wall type.  The external heat can easily heated up the nesting rooms.

4) It seems that there were lots of owl shits and those rolls of hairs all over the floor.  The BH seems to have been used by the owls to act as their evening stop over.

5) The monkey house was very small and the size of the main entrance hole was about 10 inches by 15 inches.

6) There were two types of ventilation holes and both were wrongly uses.

7) The light penetrating one of the ventilation holes type were too high.

There were many more things that I simply do not understand what the original consultant wanted to do.

I did advised the owner to make a police report so that this so call consultant stop cheating others.

Well the revamp job started a few days ago and I hope something interesting will happen.

The chances to bring those birds in are there but the biggest challenge will be the heat and the light.

A Small Accident At Kampung Rotan, Kuala Selangor !!!

I was on my way home after about 2 hours at Pantai Remis BH and it was raining heavily.

Due to lots of cars on the road in front I slowed down and stop.

Suddenly there was this big bump and I know for sure someone hit my car.

The rain already stop and quickly came out to check what really hit me.

It was a Proton but it was actually due to a third car at the back of it.

This old man driving a Mercedes Benz slammed to the Proton and he lurched forward to kiss my car.

It was a mess but no one was injured.

Soon enough the crowd swell and everybody wanted to know what actually happened.

After more or less 30 minutes were taken to the nearby Police station to make our report.

I was not happy when the Mercedes driver make a statement in his Police report that I suddenly stop for no reason and that leads to his ramming the Proton car.

I insisted that I stop due to the heavy traffic crawling in front of me and it was raining heavily.

I later discovered that he was on the phone trying to locate a person who was supposed to meet him for some money owed to him.

He was talking on the phone and was not concentrating on his driving.

The final result is that I was not able to drive my car for at least one week.

The repair shop owner indicated that he need at least one week and also he need to get the insurance party remit the third party coverage.

What a mess and the person responsible never say sorry until today.

A BH In Dungun !!!

One of the four BHs visited during my trip with a BH owner who wanted me to advise on what can be done to improve his BH.

The BH was located on a piece of land used to be a padi field.

The field was left unattended and now covered with grasses.

There were lots of foot prints of those wild buffaloes.

The number of years into operation was about 1.5 and the number of nests grew to about 200.

There were a number of young birds on the floor with their head off.

The BH design was very simple but the full understanding of those birds likes and dislikes were not observed.

My first comment was on the floor brightness.  It was simply to much light and if he could have minimize those light it will perform much better.

He should have erect a few walls to block those light and a partition to make a VIP room at the far end is something great.

My suggestion as option 1

This particular BH was doing well however if I were him I will do some thing to:

1) Make full use of the excess land outside the BH.  The total land size was 2.5 acres but he only use about 80'X30'.  What he should have done is open some pond just in front of his BH main entrance hole.

2) He might as well plant a few figs trees around the pond.

3) The light from the connecting door between the monkey house and the LAL was was too high.  I told him to perhaps shut the area with a floor to the beam partition and open a door somewhere in the middle about 3 feet wide.

4) The BH nesting areas were too opened and not comfortable for those birds to hide.  He should perhaps erect the VIP room.  He knows about VIP room since he used it successfully in his Kuantan BH.

5) He need to realigned all those internal sound tweeters to face the flight path.

5a) I think he also need to add a few more internal sound tweeters about 150 more per floor.

6) He also need to know where to install those external sound tweeters inside the nesting room.

7) One of his biggest problem are the corner nests.  Most of his tenants are making their nest on corners.  I told him to think of a way to force his tenants to use the flat areas.

8) I was not very happy with his effort to install as many fake nests as possible.

9) I think he can get more birds inside if he apply my perfume garden idea.

10) The problem with his headless dead bodies must be some kind of predators that are fond of bird's head.  It could be either the bat or rat.  He should try to install a kind of cctv camera example the one that are used on your car dash board.  Try to monitor what predators are coming in at what time.

Lukut BH Revamp Taking Shape !!!

The owner's main complain was that his tenants are not paying their rental fee.

They stayed but not erecting any nest.

During my 30-40 minutes inspection I discovered why.

The BH was facing the bright light syndrome and the owner did not noticed it.

I showed to him the amount of light needed to make them to erect their nests.

After explaining the thing that he should do, I quickly confirmed that he wanted me to come over with my workers.

To cut his expenses I told him to focus on only one floor.

Choose the floor with the most number of fresh bird shit spots on the floor.

These were the list of things I recommended him to do:

1) Erect a few walls to minimize those light.
2) Install hexagonal tweeter above his main entrance hole.
3) Install about 6 power tweeters around the monkey house roof.
4) Two pole external sound tweeters were installed on the main entrance hole frame.
5) New set of external sound tweeters at the connecting window between the nesting room and the tunnel.
6) A few chocolate tweeters inside the nesting rooms.
7) Deploy more cluster tweeters.
8) Install as many fake nests as possible to accelerate those birds to build their nests.
9) Apply all with pheromone.
10) Upgrade the external sound playing amplifiers.
11) Change the external and internal sounds.
12) Move one of the humidifiers to the second floor.
13) Set the sound volumes correctly.

He will soon see the improvements.

So far he was very excited with the progress and soon it will be into operation mode.

The Perfume Garden Combined With Fake Nests !!!

This was how the perfume bottles combined with fake nests looks like.

You might want to copy this idea but there is no historical claim that it will work.

It came to my mine a few days ago.

This happened when a BH owner from Raub send to me all those photos about how he successfully apply this old idea of mine.

His method was to install the bottles separately.

My method is to assemble them in a row each with a Styrofoam fake nest.

The bottles were made of cut 2" long 1" diameter PVC pipe and covered one end with a 25mm cap.

For it to hang onto the nesting planks I used about 4 inches steel band.

I installed this interesting idea in Lukut and let see if those birds will be attracted to them.

If they are, we now have a new method on how to lure them to populate the flat areas of our nesting planks.
