More Than 600 Birds Inside His BH But Little Nests !!!

After solving one problem this owner complained of a new problem.

"Pak Harry, I followed your advises and now more than 600 birds entered my BH however how come there are no nests?" asked a fellow who met me for teh tarik (a drink) yesterday.

This particular person owned two BHs on a piece of land in Pancing, Kuantan.

On the first day of meeting me he was like a lost soul and telling me that his BH seems to have very little birds entering and wanted my advises.

He took me over to see his BH and I put forward a few ideas on why his BH was pretty empty.

After implementing those ideas plus installation of insect barn, the number of birds entering into his BH increased to almost 600 birds.

To me when 600 birds entered from those days "negligible" he has a tremendous potential in populating his BH.

That was done within about two months.

I told him to upgrade both the internal and external sounds, make his nesting rooms darker, install power tweeters around his entrance hole, make sure his external sound are arranged  and position correctly, install those wet floor system and try those insect generating system.

He did precisely what I told him to do.

His BHs were location is ideal, in the middle of newly planted palm oil plantation.

Prior to installing those recommended gadgets not many birds will visit his BH rooftop however now even without any sound played, there will be hundreds of birds visiting his BH every morning.

And yesterday he came out with another complaint:  "Pak Harry how come there are no nests?"

He did not understand why those birds inside are not producing those precious nests.

I told him that it will take at least 3-4 months before those birds will start making their nests.

The core purpose of building their nests is for them to start a family.

If those birds are still too young they will need longer period to start one.

Those who are matured will take some time to evaluate the BH conditions.

They need to feel very safe, no predators, not disturbances from human, the right temperature and humidity, proper darkness before starting their love making.

Once they are ready you will see lots of feathers on the bird shit spots on the floor below them.

The feather removal indicate that the couple is ready to start making love.

Feathers removal is something very natural to these birds.  From my own logical thinking the male will remove a number of feathers, usually wings feather, of the female.

In doing so she will be have a damaged wings.  Damage wings mean slower flying speed.

The male can now make love acrobatically in the air.

Once finish the breeding cycle the feather will be replaced with new one.

Give you birds some three to four months before seeing nests markings and soon they will build their nests.

During that period you need to ensure that there are no disturbances that might make those birds feel unsafe.

I also encouraged him to install about 100 fake nests to hasten the nesting works. Use those soft gel type fake nests.  Once they are occupied you can literary tear them away leaving the real nests on their own.  In this way you can relocate the fake nests at a new location.

Your mission is to get the couple to lay one egg.  Once they did that the couple will be your permanent tenant until they die (usually).

As at today I hope he will be a little patience with his 600 new birds.....
