(This is not the BH mentioned in this article)
Yesterday Jan 8th 2015 visited this three stories high BH located somewhere at Carey Island.
The owner wanted to erect a few more BHs around the same place and wanted my opinions on where to erect them.
At the same time he already erected one unit which he claimed to be with 60 nests after 1.5 years into operation.
I visited the ready and operating BH just to have a look.
Quite pleased with the design and the nesting planks arrangements.
However I pointed a few things which can help to get more new tenants into the BH.
My fist focal point was on the entrance hole areas.
The number of external sound tweeters were just too simple and little.
A hexagonal tweeter and perhaps a mini bazooka might help to lure more birds into this BH.
My second point of concern was the nest distribution on the two floors (ground floor was converted into house for his workers).
The number of birds seems to be more on the top most floor while the middle floor was lesser.
I told the owner that event though the LAL was well positioned but there was little external sound tweeters to guide those wild birds to the lower floor.
Frankly the external sound tweeters were only installed at the entrance hole areas and the LAL.
There was not a single external sound tweeters inside the nesting rooms or at the door of the rooms.
A common mistake which can be easily modified.
The BH nesting planks arrangements were fined but all those 90* corners were covered with those curved corner covers.
There was not a single fake nest installed and the number of internal sound tweeters were marginal (about 90 pieces).
Each floor was with two humidifiers and both were using the standard timer setting and not those humidistat.
I advised them to upgrade to using humidistat if they wanted their BH to be precisely wet.
The internal sound amplifiers were set on 1 hour times 1 hour. The two amplifiers rotate its function.
I prefer the 12 X 12 hours rotation.
At night the sound volume should be higher.
The internal sound was without any baby bird sound.
He is using those colony sound and not something like babyking or superbabyking.
I told him to change the internal sounds, like superbabyking, to make sure every new tenants of his can quickly mate and pay their rental.
There were many markings on the floor as compared to the number of nest erected, I told him.
"Dato if you look at some of those bird shit markings on your floor, they seems to be very thick however there were no sign of nest erected." my precise words used.
What I was trying to tell the BH owner was that he got more tenants who are now building their nests.
The possible reasons can be the followings:
1) The internal sound was not good enough. The colony sound is not strong enough to make them feel like mating.
2) They might be having problem with their saliva glands. They cannot produce enough saliva and he need to assist them by installing fake nests jest below every marking found on the nesting planks.
3) The BH nesting rooms darkness was not adequate. He need to put up a few more partitions to block those bright light.
I tested two external sounds and the moment played a number of birds came to entrance hole and that makes the owner feel excited.
Plan to list a number of things for his to do if he wanted to increase the number of nests inside his BH.
