Beware Of Low Resistance Tweeters.....

I was with a Communication Specialist who hold a degree in sound engineering.

He presently is a lecturer with one of the local Uni located in the North.

His hourly fee is nothing less then Rm 500.

During my conversation with him he make a very strong point about the use of tweeters in your BH.

Remember if you wish to mix a few types of tweeters on the same cable, make sure they are of the same resistance. They use the word ohm to measure the amount of electrical resistance.

If you place a few tweeters with lesser ohm, most of the power will be moving towards these tweeters. As such the sound will be concentrated on the few tweeters while the rest will do very little to increase your swiftlet's population.

The best is to segment your BH so that you can run one set of cable to a group of low resistance tweeters while the rest will be run on a separate wire.

It is more like allowing a stream of water into a Padi Fields. The lesser the resistance, the more the water will enter the field.

Common Mistakes That Can Jeopardize Your BH Sound System.

One of the most important section that many BH owners failed to manage is the sound system.

I think 90% of those who operate their BH do not have any clue about how those amplifiers works and how they are timed to run at the right time of the day.

Some depend so much on their electricians or their consultant to do what the consultant/electrician think right.

Do you think what the consultant set is right or worse the electrician who knows nothing about BH operation?

Their idea is simple, as long the sound is working from say 7 am till 7 pm it is okay to them.

I don't think this is right and my advise is to clearly understand what is best for your BH and make sure those birds like the volume, the timing and the type of sound you played.

I was at this BH during my Friday BH outing and was looking at the sound system. I was supposed to change the sound only but upon looking at the configuration the electrician seem to have mess up the cables and everything was haywire.

Everything that was done was wrong and I am not going to leave until I reconnect those wires.

First was to identify the right cables to the right tweeters.

Then to allocate them to either the internal sound or the external sound.

Finally which should go to the Left and which to the Right connectors at the back of the amplifiers.

Once done you need to be able to control the volume so that the one to be loud is properly set and the lower sound be subjected to proper sound testing.

The method which the timer was used was not right and I have advised the owner to get a new digital timer to get the internal sound be played on a 24 hrs basis.

After reconnection and fined tuning the BH seem to be more appropriate and those birds were on the roof.

I told the owner it is a matter of time that they will become his long term tenant.

He smiled and this was the best smile for a very long time.

He said that for the last 7 months he could not smile and can never have a good sleep. He put every penny of his saving in this BH and the "Consultant" let him down very bad.

I am so happy that I put that smiles back on his face.

Inside me I feel sad that his wife is not well. I shed some tears while writing this article. Main reason being I was told by his good friend that his wife is terminally ill and he will loose her shortly.

I just cannot understand why his so call "Consultant" do this to him while he channelled all his saving to this project.

I hope my small contribution will at least make him and wife happy that the money was well spend.

How Many Tweeter Types Should You Use In Your New Birdhouse !!!!

Birdcall sound is a must for any new Birdhouse (BH). The moment your sound system fails or not functioning to the required specification, your BH is bound to fail.

I have seen many BHs which used to have streams of birds entering the house and when the sound system fail to operate, the birds were no longer there.

Sound failure might be due to a few reasons but more often then not is due to no electrical supply because the owner have lost interest in the house. I have seen this in Port Klang and Kuala Selangor recently.

The lesson we learn from these events is that you must ensure that your sound system are running perfectly all the time.

For a BH to be successful you need to plan to choose the right type of sound system which comprise of the sound medium (CD or thumbdrive), the sound players, the amplifiers, the tweeters, the type of wires, timers, and the best method of installation.

What you need is a resonably good system that will produce a high quality sound to entice those wild birds to enter your BH and to feel that you BH is full of other birds with lots of babies crying for food.

To do this I would like to focus on the various types of tweeters that I feel essential to a new BH.

To me every BH must have a minimum of three sets of bird call tweeters.

1) First set is the external call tweeters. These tweeters must have the ability to travel at least 500 meters away from the tweeters towards the flight path of those wild birds. There are many choices available in the market. Some can reach a range of 1,000 meters.

2) Second is a set of tweeters that you use to lure the birds into the house the moment they enter the entrance hole into your tunnel and into the roving cum nesting areas.

3) Third are those tweeters that you use to mimic baby birds chips plus those love making sound that you placed on the nesting planks. These set of tweeters should be properly install and I do recommend that each tweeter be wrap with mesh wires for those birds to cling to.

Some BH that I visited put in additional tweeters outside the house, mount on a pole just next to the entrance hole. They looks likes an arrays of cone tweeters that have the ability to provide a 360* birdcall sound area. The are ussually term as Hexagon Tweeters.

I am not an expert in these sound equipment but from what I have learned and experienced, one of the most important criteria in choosing these tweeters is to ensure that they will provide a crystal clear sound mimicing the birds that will attract them into your BH.

There are two types that are very common. The Piezo and Magnet. Piezo are much lighter while the magnet are heavy and larger in size. Both are acceptable but for your nesting plank area I recommend the use of piezo while those area where you draw the bird into the BH you use the magnet typer.

For your external call you have to be carefull in selecting the right type since you might expose the tweeters to the hot sun and those heavy rains.
