Well let me be very frank.

The idea works.

I have tested it and see these two pictures.

One of the installation on waste wood corner.

This one with a young birds still clinging to her nest.

I have tried it in my Kepong BH and the result so far is outstanding.

The only thing that came to my mind was how to maximize the use of this special invention.

What I can say is that the chances to be tenanted for each spot will be much higher as compared to other 90* corners.

Let say it will be 50% higher.

This will be good enough to secure more tenants inside my BH.

Beside this brilliant idea I planned to install about 100 fake nests on each floor.

Again the chances to get those swiftlet to occupy these fake nests will be about 20-30%.

The deployment of cluster tweeters will have a special effect of those birds and I think the chances to be occupied will be another 30-50% high.

And I will continue further by installing those waste wood corners that also will have a 20-30% chances to improve my BH.

When you keep deploying new ideas to your BH you can feel that once they entered there will be a very strong chances that they will love to be your permanent tenant.

What about spraying those "Super Pheromone"?

Have you think about conditioning the BH with Mutiara Aroma?

Do you think those last tango sound system will draw more birds over the top of your BH?

Then again I have this idea of creating a few VIP rooms on all the floors.

What if I activate those insect generating powder?

These are the things that you as a swiftlet farmer to think about.

You cannot sit still and hope for the best.

You need to continuously think of all the gadgets and tools that will help to populate your BH.

Let Us Experiment With Aromatic Nesting Planks !!!

What if we apply a suitable plank aroma just after the installation were done?

I have been toying with this new idea and have not done it before.

This time around I prepared the aroma and got a general worker to use those "Shallex" brush to apply on the newly installed planks.

The idea is to make the nesting planks inside my VIP room to be more attractive as compared to the main hall area.

This batch of aroma was made of same kind of nest water and sea weed.

I hope I can make another new formulation for the next VIP room.

Each VIP room will be applied with different kind of aroma that I can come out with.

The most important precaution is to make sure the room that you applied the aroma must be properly aired to quickly dry the planks.  If not properly dried those mould will start growing.

I am sure you must have thought about this method before but be careful.

"Never ever try to apply any aroma that are made of bird shit water."

The smell of these shit on the nesting plank will make the birds to think that there is another nest above the spot they landed.

Once that is in their mind they will avoid selecting that particular spot.

Remember if there is another nest directly above the spot, there is a very strong chances that those baby birds upstairs will drop their poops into your house.

You will soon see the lower nest being flooded with bird's poops.

Must We Clean And Treat Those Owls Markings???

A totally new BH with lots of markings left by at least one owl.

What should be done on those markings?

The Bachok, Kelantan BH was completed about two to three months ago.

With no nesting planks and sound system installed it was left opened for some unwanted guests.

The owl came to stay and their markings on the walls, the entrance hole, the fringes plus the top floor were a big concerned to me.

The lesson from this episode is that if you have a new BH about to be completed I strongly recommend that the main entrance hole be shut or closed for any unwanted visitors.

The markings especially those white coloured shit and globules of rats skin were all over the place.

These so called markings do give out some distinct smell which will make your potential tenants scared in staying at your BH.

So what should be done when you wrongly opened those entrance hole?

The best steps would be:

1) Try to quickly stop these unwanted visitors from coming into your BH.  You can either close the entrance hole or install some kind of wires to prevent their movement into the house.

2) You need to quickly removed those globules and perhaps do some cleaning.  Those white spots need to be removed.  Use water jet or steel brush to remove them.

3) Once the area is cleaned it will be a great to apply my Mutiara Aroma on the floor and entrance hole areas.

You main aim is to remove the odours plus the sight of these markings.

You need to ensure that those swiftlet will not feel stress or scared on becoming the owl victim.

You cannot allow them to feel uncomfortable until they will not be interested to be your tenant.

After you have done your cleaning exercise you need to install those gadgets that will prevent these owl from entering your BH ever again.

The best will be those electrical shock wires.

Started My Work In Bachok, Kelantan !!!

Remember the BH that was with Muslim architecture in Kelantan?

The owner finally accepted my recommendations and wish that I can mobilize my staff as soon as I can.

This job is massive and I might need two group of workers to install those nesting planks and its sound system.

On Tuesday October 2nd 2012, I managed to start the challenge.

The nesting planks and the various gadgets were already at site.

Once arrived talk to the first set of workers about how I wanted those nesting planks to be installed.

"I wanted the nesting planks to be installed with no gap with the ceiling." My first request.

The next requirement was how the planks shall be lined in space between those ceiling columns.

Beside on the ceiling I told them what I wanted them to do to block those bright light from polluting the VIP rooms.

"Pak Harry we need about 90 pieces of 2"x3"x12' wood, 60 pieces of 2"x2"x12' wood and about 68 pieces of ceiling boards."  the supervisor of the group told to purchase for all the 7 partitions.

I have a strong feeling that they will do a good job.

They started with the first ceiling area and after two days the work done was pretty neat.

The gap between the planks and the cement ceiling were zero.  Those corner covers for cluster tweeters mounting were perfectly arranged.

The new idea of using half of the 90* corner cover were done and the waste corners were also furnished.

Perfect and there will be no other BH in Bachok that will be as pretty as this.

I was impressed with the way they did the precautions that they took not to step onto the planks.

I hope within the next two weeks the nesting planks installation will be completed and I can assemble my sound system installer to be at site one week before finishing.

A very interesting project and I think the owner will love my special design plus get those birds to enter the house from the first day of operation.

Be A Bit Patience !!!

Before revamping the number of nests stuck to about 8 but now !!!

A very interesting development on the Gambang BH that I was asked to revamp.

Gambang is about 2.5 hours drive from Kuala Lumpur.

This morning the caretaker, happened to be the owner's brother, called to inform about that the sounds both the external and internal sounds were in perfect running condition.

I was worried since a few weeks ago they went down dew to some unknown reasons.

I suspected the humidifiers but you never know.

The best was to get the care taker to do some investigation.

I told him to check on the recently installed humidifiers.  Prior to their installation the electrical supply was never disrupted.

My suspicion was right and after shutting down three of the 8 humidifiers the house have not experience any shut down.

This evening the care taker called and before picking up the phone I was worried that the same electrical failure problem still continued.

"Pak Harry, I am now at the site and watching the entrance hole.  You know something?  Now the number of birds that entered our BH is much more than our neighbours during peak hours.  There were 4-5 birds jumping into the top entrance hole every few seconds.  Before you did the revamp I can see the most one or two."

I remember using my latest KPOP sound for this BH. (Testing operation).

His problem now is how come the number of nest is not high enough?

Before my revamp operation his question was how come no birds entering our BH?

"Pak Harry, I know the number of nests have increased but I think with the current number of birds entering our BH it could have been more.  How can we increase them?"

My answer to him was be patience and I am sure the nest number will some increase.  The most important is to ensure that those sounds are running continuously without any stoppages.

"I will try to spray those super Pheromone this coming week and that will stimulate those that stayed to be aroused." I promised him.

My plan for my next visit will be to spray two cannisters of the Super Pheromone plus a layer of my Mutiara Aroma.

I also will set some aluminium fake nests at areas closed to where I can see lots of bird shit on the floor to trap those birds.

All in all he need to be patience and let those birds settle down.

We need to excite them to mate.

What Can Happen When You Apply My Mutiara Aroma !!!

This morning received a nice call from a BH owner who recently used my Mutiara Aroma formulation.

This particular BH owner owned a number of BHs in Teluk Intan, Perak

Together with his partner they met me about three months ago at Subang Jaya, Selangor.

After having some discussions with me they wanted me to supply the Mutiara Aroma.

What I recommended to them was to purchase the formula and mix the aroma themselves.

The real reason was that if they buy the ready made it will be more expensive and the cost to transport the aroma will be pretty expensive and heavy.

They agreed to my idea and bought the formula.

After getting the raw materials and followed my formulation they applied the aroma just to test if it will work.

After diligently spraying the aroma on the walls and floors for one month they saw something unusual.

"Pak Harry I wanted to ask you something.  You know after following your Mutiara Aroma formulation and spraying it every one week for the last four weeks, we can see a lot of bird shit markings on the walls.  Is that a good sign?" he asked.

I was trying to find the right answer that will make him more comfortable.

"Usually when those birds left their shits on the BH walls, they are actually trying to put their territorial markings. They have visited your BH and to have them on all the walls that you applied the aroma is a very good sign.  As long as your nesting room internal sound tweeters are working there will be a great chances that they will stay.  If I were you try to lure them more by spraying the "Super Pheromone" on those planks." I told him.

Last week I shipped out some pheromone as a back up.

They purchased about 6 canisters of the super pheromone and I told him to call me for proper guidance where to apply the aroma.

Base on this latest event I think the Mutiara Aroma is working and do attract those wild birds entering your BH.

All you need to do is to keep applying this aroma every week if you can.

Sabah State Issued Their Latest Guidelines !!!

For those in Sabah, please be informed of the latest guidelines for swiftlet farming.

At least they have proper guidelines.

Other states in Malaysia have not made any attempt to issue similar guidelines.

Swiftlet farming guidelines out Published on: Friday, October 05, 2012  Email to a friend      Printer Friendly Kota Kinabalu: The Wildlife Department under the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Environment on Thursday announced a set of guidelines for swiftlet farming industry in the State. The Ministry's Permanent Secretary, Datuk Michael Emban, said the 15 guidelines would come into effect on Jan 1 next year. "The guidelines were decided in a meeting attended by the State's highest policy and decision-makers recently," he explained at a press conference here, Thursday. Among others, the guidelines require that certain standards and levels of premise upkeep must be adhered to  in areas of noise, health and pollution before swiftlet farming licences can be issued by the relevant council. Also present at the press conference were Wildlife Department Director Datuk Laurentius Ambu, Tawau Swiftlets  Association Protem Chairman Datuk Kour Nam Ngum and representatives of swiftlets associations  from other parts of  the State. The full guidelines are: 1. The swiftlet farm houses must not be built in central cities, municipalities or towns, including all housing areas,  places frequented by the public, schools, clinics, houses of worship, water-catchment areas or any public places. 2. The building of swiftlet farm houses within the jurisdiction of the Local Authorities are subject to the land usage according  to the District Plans or Local Plans. 3. Swiftlet farm houses must not be built within 100 metres from the airport and within five kilometres from the airport  landing area. 4. A map of the swiftlet farm house area must be provided and enclosed with the application form. The application form  can be obtained through the Wildlife Department. 5. Swiftlet farming activity is only allowed on lands where its stated land use is agriculture. 6. Swiftlet farmers must ensure the cleanliness of the houses, the areas surrounding the houses and scheduled waste  disposal. 7. Every farmer must ensure that problems that can adversely affect the public health such as foul odour, breeding of  mosquitoes, flies and the cleanliness of the area surrounding the buildings are under control. 8. The use of sound recordings of swiftlets must not exceed 55dB, the speakers should be pointing to the sky at an  angle of 60 degrees and can only be used from 6am to 7pm. 9. To obtain a permit, farmers are required to have these licences/permits: a). Trading licence from the Local Authorities b). For new permits, farmers must obtain Animal Husbandry Permit from the Wildlife Department. All application  forms can be obtained through the District Wildlife Department Offices. c). For farmers who want to sell their birds' nests, they need to have the Animal Trader Permit from the Wildlife Department. d). For farmers who want to import/export birds' nests, they need to obtain the Permit for Bringing In and Permit for  Bringing Out from the Wildlife Department. e). Permits are renewable on annual basis. 10. Transfers of swiftlet chicks or eggs must have permission from the Wildlife Department. 11. Swiftlet farmers must keep records of swiftlet nests' harvest or disposal. 12. Swiftlet farmers must have Risk Management Plan. 13. Swiftlet farmers who fail to comply with any of these guidelines shall be liable to a fine or imprisonment or both. 14. All swiftlet farmers must: a). Comply with the Good Animal Husbandry Practise (GAHP) b). Comply with conditions stipulated by any government agencies c). Undergo scheduled health and medical check-ups d). Comply with other directives by government agencies from time to time The compliance of these guidelines and the closing of all swiftlet farm houses in central cities, municipalities or towns are given a period of 24 months starting from Jan 1, 2013.

About To Visit A New BH That Was Put Into Operation Mode For Three Months !!!

The Seremban, N9 BH is due for its three months inspection after launching.

The owner called to confirm his availability and looking forward to see how many bird shit spots will be on the floor.

The BH was new and converted from being a shop house.

I took about three weeks to complete the conversion and I added a few interesting fuatures which I hope will attract more birds into this BH.

1)  First the BH have this main entrance hole facing the back of the shop house.  The monkey house was actually the air vent.  We opened about 2.5 feet by 3 feet long.

2) The air vent monkey house external walls were fixed with power tweeters facing the back and the two sides.

3) The internal walls of the air vent were painted dark to minimize those light.

4) The Birds need to enter the main hall at the middle and can turn left or right to enter the VIP rooms.

5) The rooms were specially designed with lots of internal sound tweeters, fake nests and those base aroma.

6) Other special gadgets that I attached were the kite, chandeliers, the aluminium plate, the pine tree leaves fake nests and those aluminium fake nests.

7) The nesting rooms were sprayed with Mutiara Aroma for more than three days before launching date.

I hope there will be good news and perhaps some pictures will be useful.

If this state of the art method works than we should have no more worries to bring those new tenants into our new BH.

Can We Use Insect's Maggots As Food For Swiftlet Chicks ???

I posted this wild idea to a group of people from UPM today September 26th 2012.

I might sound crazy but have any body ever tried?

Today I was invited by a good friend to accompany him to meet a group of Professors, Lecturers and student from University Pertanian Malaysia.

I never knew that some of them have read my blog but I am proud to say that some did.

It was my first meeting with people who are keen to explore doing research on swiftlet farming with Public Sectors.

The key person who initiated this meeting was a BH owner who wanted to allow UPM to conduct any relevant research on swiftlet farming using his operating BH.

Ever since he mentioned his intention I have been calling him to know the result so far.

After submitting his presentation materials to the University he received a positive result and wanted to have a brief discussion on how the Faculty can work with him.

I was invited to be one of the participant so that I can bring more ideas that I believed will help the Industry.

During my opening introduction I quoted my case about the lack of Government support in swiftlet industry.

It can bring in more than 1 billion a year and yet we have nothing or not enough support by the appropriate ministry.

If you have problem to breed fish we have Lembaga Kemajuan Ikan.

If we have problem with our rubber trees we have the RRI.

If we have problem with palm oil we have MPOB.

If we have problem with our tobacco plant we have Lembaga Kemajuan Tembakau.

If we have problem with our Padi plantation we have the Lembaga Kemajuan Padi & Beras Negara.

But just try this.  If you have problem with your swiftlet farm, who do you go and see?

This is why I suggested to the PM before that he should push in the setting up of Lembaga Kemajuan Penternakan Sarang Burung Walit (LKPSBW).

Anyway my main intention to join today meeting was mainly to create some interest in UPM to help our swiftlet industry.

No matter how small they participate it will be a good start.

The following ideas were generated during the 3 hours meeting:

1) To generate a SOP for insect breeding for swiftlet.

2) To generate a SOP on breeding of swiftlet.

3) To conduct research on the use of affordable gadget to minimize nitrite found in swiftlet nest.

4) To conduct research on the use of specialized gadget to minimize sound pollution caused by BHs.

5) To conduct research in the use of nano technology on traceability of swiftlet nest.

6) To conduct research in tracing the percentage of young birds that return back after releasing exercise.

The above are just some ideas and it will be dependant to the faculty to go ahead or not.

If the above lists are selected and each have a positive result I think it will boost the Industry that we love so much.

Perhaps the university will continue with many other areas that are crucial.

I cannot say more than thank you very much for giving me and my friend an opportunity to share our ideas.

All in all it will be good to our swiftlet farming industries.

Those who would like to offer their help, like allowing these researches to use your BH, will be most welcome.

A Newbie Who Started Breeding Those Insects !!!

There are two type swiftlet farmer.

The type that are ready to try new things to improve their BH population and those who have this bad feeling that if they try something new the BH will be doom.

Today received two email messages and the strange thing is that the guy who proceeded was very happy with the outcome while the second email have this bad feeling that his BH will smell bad and there will be lots of ants, cockroaches and rats.

The guy who went ahead is like there is no full stop about the insect breeding.

how many tray did he put ? what time does the vid taken ? that was crazy !

currently mine 1st 4 tray is near the end of their life. 2 is doing quite fine altho too dry but the other 2 is zzzzzz with little maggot, because of too watery ,  problem is i started the mixture too early, 2 weeks b4 maggot brought in!!

the 3 new tray finally got the right viscosity about  2L mixture for each tray, finally can see full of maggots like the vid you show, next week should get the peak output from those 3 tray . how many insect will produce if all 8 tray running at peak ?

can notice new activity from cctv ,can see many bird come feed  morning but mostly in the evening, can see alot young bird jamming around entrance hole to the breeding room, fly in n out and cling on the wall and the guiding tweeter. i didnt count hw many nest in the bh, lazy too many, only 1 week

I am not sure which is drosophila/fruit flies. Is it the one where the the size of adult drosophila is about 2.5cm to 3cm?

If yes will such tiny insect attract swiftlet? 

How much is the cost of insect starter?

 Is the insect power suitable for BH at shop house? 

Will the smell to strong for neighbours and swiftlet? 

Will the insect powder attract pests like rats, ants & cockroach?

A very interesting development in my swiftlet farming career.

Last month I received three expatriate who live in Surat Tani Thailand who wanted to erect three BHs.

They have heard about swiftlet farming and only now wanted to start one each.

Now there are a few others that have made some kind of appointment to be with me to learn more about how to be a successful swiftlet farmer.

There was one from the Philippine who wanted to erect his first BH on Pahlawan Island.

Tentatively he will be coming to join my November 3rd Seminar and wanted to extend about two extra days for extra coaching.

There is another lady from Vietnam who wanted to have a one to one basis to learn about how to design the right BH on a piece of land she bought recently.

She will be choosing the date and I have been waiting for her to confirm.

Today received another call from Cambodia.

This person confessed that he thought building a BH is simple however after having it into operating mode only bats were staying.

Those swiftlet refuse to be his tenant.

He sense something was not right and the only way out is to visit Malaysia for an outing with me.

It make a lot of sense to come and learn everything about swiftlet farming and perhaps visit a number of BHs that will teach you a lot of tricks about swiftlet farming.

To those who have any kind of problems or about to start building a BH please explore the possibility of getting the right knowledge from someone who is willing to share his experiences.

The best is to get a proper sketch of your BH with dimensions, as many photos as possible, the entrance hole, the sun path direction, the flying path of those birds, pictures of your amplifiers and its setting,and the external and internal sounds you are using.

Absolutely Brilliant !!!

The waste wood corner installation in one of the many BHs that I revamped seems to be proving that I was dead right.

Those birds seems to like them very much and in this particular BH they occupied nearly 30% of the total number (about 50).

I remember about 1 one and half year ago I saw this special bird's attraction gadget installed in a BH some where at Kota Bahru Kelantan.

When inspection this special BH I came across the installation and I asked how it was discovered.

"Pak Harry, actually after completing the nesting planks installation I found many left overs.  Since they are very expensive, 2.30 per foot, I asked my workers to think of a way to salvage them.  That was how they started to cut into small pieces, about 6"-7" long, and nailed them onto the nesting planks."

I took some pictures and immediately use this idea in any other BH that I was engaged to look after.

The idea not only minimise the throwing away of those expensive nesting planks left overs but it create a special place where those birds love to build their nest.

I am sure if you copy this idea it will do good to you and your BHs.

If I were you try to combine its usage with a few other gadgets that will make these waste wood corners becoming more effective.

The best is to combine with those internal sound tweeters, fake nests, 90* corner cover half size and Super Pheromone.

My Award Winning Idea !!!

While browsing those old pictures taken inside those BHs that I revamped I came across some that are worth to talk about.

One of the selected picture is this interesting method that my workers installed:

Looking at this first picture you might ask "What is so special about this?"

Before I answer your question let us talk about its make up and where it was installed.

The wall on the background indicated that it was installed on those nesting plank that was on the wall of the nesting room.

It has to be on the perimeter of the box between a wall and a beam.

There are three pieces of woods.  One in the waste wood piece and there are two pieces of short corner covers.

The shorten 90* corner covers were with those grooves.

My question  here is that "How many nests can be build at this particular location?"

There are 8 possible locations.  Four on the right and four on the left.

If you remove the gadget how many nest can be build at this location?

Maybe two.

So we have 8 against 2 or 400% more by putting this gadget at a selected location.

This will be very good for a BH that is facing shortage of nesting space.

A very simple idea but if you analyse its advantages it will make you smile.

Beside additional nesting space what else can you benefited by installing this gadget?

If you BH is new, this gadget will be something that will attract those birds to quickly decide to be your tenant.

They prefer the one on the top of the 90* corner cover.

You have two spots here.  One of the left and one on the right.

Beside creating that platform to build their nest you also provide them with a 90* angle where they are protected from any attack from the left, right and the top.

You know that new birds prefer those 90* corners more that flat surface right?

So you are talking at giving them the sense of security and a platform to start their first nest.

Also remember my advise that if you want a couple that just entered your BH try to do everything that you can to lure them to stay until the female laid her first egg.

Both will be your tenant until they die !!!
