Jungkat Beach Revisited !!!

In Pontianak, Indonesia, Jungkat Beach owner (whole family), took me back to visit their Birdhouse which they built by using The DIY.

In July 2008, the number of nests were about 40 after just three months in operations.

Now the number have multiplied to almost 179 nests. There were lots of nest markings.

I was wondering why they have such a tremendous number of nests in such a short span of 6 months.

One of the reason, I suspected, was the location plus the fact that they moved lots of those bird shits from a friend's BH located about a few short distance from Jungkat.
Remember what I said about "Don't Help Your Neighbor's BH buy selling your BH bird shits?".

The location is almost perfect. Close to a Walet Central (Sungai Pinyu) and just beside an astuary with a fresh water lake in the middle.

Now the owner have started two more new units located at the opposite site of the current BH building.

I do have some reservation but the owner seem to be very convinced that the old BH is giving such a huge increased in new nests he just could not resist the temptation.

He was looking for investors to built a few more and his ambition was to be as big as those at Sungai Pinyu Walet Central or better.
There are a few interesting positive points that you should consider:
1) The birds population are high and their hunting areas are huge.
2) The rate of success is said to be 80% as compare to us in Peninsular Malaysia about 20%.
3) Their cost is much lower then cost to built one in Malaysia.
4) Even with very little technology their BH do very well. What if you deploy those high tech to these BHs?
The only negative points are:
1) The title of those land or BH cannot be on your name. You need to use an Indonesian Resident's name.
2) You need to travel by air for at least a day to reach the destination.

Plastic Wrapped BH In Pontianak !!!

The word is "Creative and Immaginative".

During my recent trip to Pontianak, I came across this very special BH being built at the back of a residential house high above the roof top of a house.

This strange wooden structure is covered with plastic garbage bags and they looked very odd.

I am sure the owner do construct some walls to prevent heating up by those sunlight.

I took a few pictures and would like to share with all my blog readers.
Spoke to some neighbors and it seem that the unit was a trial unit and there were some birds in the house.

Due to some reasons the sound was no longer working.

They Have Come Out With Smart Birdhouse !!!

Have you ever thought of running your BH with a fully automatic mode?

You might have heard about Intelligent House where people live in but for a Birdhouse?

Hmm .......

I believed you will think that I am crazy to even talk about it.

"Harry is out of his mind. Too much of those traveling and entering those Aroma laced houses make him koo koo."

I might be but this was one of those exciting gadget that was put on a display during our late evening barbecue in Pontianak, Indonesia.

The whole idea is to run your BH by using a computer system that is attached with all those sensors that can be controlled manually or by your mobile phone.

I was quite stunned with the idea but after listening and watching the demonstration, I believed that this might be something that might be a norm in all BHs.

There are many applications that you can run by using this intelligent software. Some of these are:

* Sound System.

Normal BH can only run on semi automatic. Your sound can only run at a fix volume the whole day. By using this automatic server, you can change the volume at any prescribed time that you like and what song you want to play.

How above playing different sound at different time of the day? Say during the day time U play those colony sound. In the evening the colony and baby sound and late at night those mating sound mixed with those baby sound are being played?

You may also want to incorporate the ultrasonic sound? This will be useful if your BH is closed to school, churches, mosque or public places.

You can check using your mobile phone what song are being played at any time of the day and those sound levels.

* Intruders.

This might be one of the most useful. You can connect sensor movements where if the movements are consistent and indicate intrusion, you will get a mobile elert. If it is well designed the location or zone where the intruders are operating can be precisely determined. I guess you can elert the police to catch those culprit.

* Humidity and Temperature control.

The monitoring of both the Temperature and Humidity will be more accurate. You can install as many sensors on all those strategic locations and monitor each and every part online basis. You can then activate your water spray based on these readings.

External Light.

The external light are essential in both keeping the BH complex safe and also those lights can also be used by the birds are becon especially when they return home late due to long distance food sourcing during dry seasons.
Using computerise system will ensure that these lightings are optimised to ensure that those birds will come to the right house and at the same time reduce electrical consumption.

* All Those Digital Timers.

You can eliminate all those digital timers once and for all. Each item in your BH can be activated precisely using a set timer on the computer. Those gadget like aroma spray, humidifiers, sound and bazookas can be activated automatically.

* What About Bird count?

This might be something to look at. The designer have not give his thought about it yet. The idea is to have two sensors that will add and subtract the number of birds that enter and leaving the entrance hole. If this can be incorporated then it will become one of the most important tool to all BHs.

Entrance Hole Gate.

Something that are common in keeping the birdhouse save from intruders. The idea is to open the window say at 5 in the morning and closed at say 9 in the everning. The server will sent the signal to shut those holes and only open in early morning.

Electrical Protection

I saw this big alarm above a BH in Batu Pahat. The owner placed a large sign board saying that his BH is protected by electrical wires and are alive only at night. The timing to have these wire on live can be determined by the imput given to the server.

Wonderful idea where your electricity will be on at say midnight till dawn when the house is most dangerous to those busgulars. The moment they climb those walls and touch the wired areas they will be electricuted.

Exhaust Fan Timing.

One way to keep your BH alway cool is to run the fan at a specific time of the night. Just imagine that your blower will blow say for about 30 minutes once the outside temperature is at 24*C. It suck the air outside and bring them into the house replenishing oxygen content of the air??? You place a temperature sensor outside the house and connect it to the server. Once the temperature reached the required range it will automatically run those fans.

Insect Cabin Activation.

If you accommodate an insect generating cabin just beside the BH closed to the entrace hole, can you think of how to operate those blowers to push the insect from the cabin at a precise time of the day. Just imagine the time is above 6 pm and the birds are coming back. The moment the time click 6pm the blower starts to function. First the air to the entrance hole and later to the roving areas.

Just imagine the attraction of those birds outside rushing in to enjoy the last day feeding before going to sleep? By the time they enter and play chasing with the insect it will be too late to go home. They will surely stay in your house as compare to your neighbors.

Well I was very impressed with the idea and so far no one have come out with such an idea.

The cost was said to be in the range of Rp 19,000,000 to Rp35,000,000.. The cost varies dependence on the various sensors that are required to be supplied and hook on.

Item was developed in Pontianak. For more details kindly contact Harry at 017 755 1318

My Visit To Pontinak: A Summary !!!

The more you travel the more new things you see and learned.

This was what happened during my five days trip to Pontianak Indonesia.

The seminar on "Strategi Jitu Mengikat" went well with more then 67 attendees from all over Indonesia, Brunei and Malaysia. I was surprised that there were at least 15 Malaysians among the 67. Two from Brunei and I came to know that they found the seminar from my blog.

The seminar content was very much similar with the one I attended in Pulau Kapas except that there were a few new pictures, video clips and articles that were interesting to view and learned.

The one that attract me most was a picture showing the use of wall nesting planks that are shit protected by using a thin strip of aluminum shade. The whole idea is when your BH is totally full U can actually install this wall mounted nesting planks that can increase your nesting areas by more then 30%.

Pak Hen introduced a very interesting idea about embedding the sound of water stream into your internal bird sound. This is something unusual and his idea was that those birds will feel peaceful and at the same time it depict the cave sound.

One more interesting Tip was about the use of those hospital drips as your aroma application gadget in your BH. Hmmm very interesting and these is one of the gem when your wife is a chief nurse.

I visited a place that was classified as "Walet Sentral" located about 1 1/2 hour drive from Pontianak main town. The Location was Sungai Pinyu. There were a cluster of BHs at one spot. Each seem to doing well but during my stay there were only a few that were seen flying around.

I also was given an opportunity to visit a DIY birdhouse build by The Chandra Family. Located about 45 minutes drive from Pontianak town at a place called Jungkat Beach. The building was done by minimum consultation and yet within just 6 months the number of bird nests was as high as 60 pieces. Unbelievable but it was true.

One of the Chandra junior was with us for the next few hours and he claimed that the success rate of any BH built in Pontinak is more then 90%. Just compare with us in Malaysia where the success rate is just about 20-30%.

This young man, who used to hate BH, now become the man to watch. He now planned to develop his father's piece of land located just facing a Muara (river flowing into the sea) to be as good or better then the "Sungai Pinyu Swiftlet Central". It shall be more systematic and well planned so that the birds have a 7 Stars hotel treatment. Sungai Pinyu Birdhouse owners, just watch out for this young man.... The best was that I was invited to be a part of the idea. Hmmmm need to carefully consider the offer.....

While waiting for my connecting flight at Jakarta Airport, took a short trip to Eka Walet Toko at Green Ville Street to meet Ibu Ida (the operator) and got from her some onde2 (products) consisting of a few new external birdcall sounds, books, aroma and saw those bird eggs being incubated for their babies. A set of young hatchings were there too......

Overall the trip was a very good experience and the number of people who claimed to read my blog was something I am very proud of. One of them is a SPA owner call "Exiotic" located in Jakarta Angerrek area.... Hmmm might want to scrub my body after a hard day at those BHs. Pak Ben Chai, Pak Victor, Pak Oswald, Pak Yong, Pak Alvin & Partner were all there for their second round.....

The next seminar was indicated to be in Jakarta. Tentative date is December 2008. Just read my blog regularly and I will surely anounce. I will not miss this apportunity for a Million ....
