The Top Most Floor Was Hitting Almost 36*C !!!

(From outside it looks very nice but what are inside, god knows)

 

A wrongly designed BH located somewhere in Lunut, Port Dickson.

I was recently invited to inspect this very large stand alone BH about 28'X100' and each floor was with 8' ceiling height.

The owner who was with very little knowledge did a terrible mistake.

If he should have attended my Swiftlet Farming Seminar he will not have allowed his contractor to erect the BH with a single wall.

To me a single wall is equivalent to a big disaster.

The heat from the BH external wall will easily creep to the internal wall and the BH will heated up and turn into a SPA.

The top most floor was the worst since the roof was also recording about 35*C.

The asbestos ceiling used must be to closed to the roof floors and maybe the air flow between the roof and the floor was too little.

I also believed that the ceiling floor was not thick enough.

Just imagine at about 3 pm the wall facing the East was registering 36.7*C, the wall to the West was about 34.6*C and the ceiling roof was also with 35.3*C.

If there is any remedies it will cost the owner a big budget.

My recommendation, it he wanted to reduce his revamp cost is to shut the top floor in total and concentrate on the 3rd and 2nd floor.

He can do this by erecting a closed walls at the LAL hole to make sure no birds will be allowed to enter the top most floor.

Another wrong thing with the BH was the ziz-zag LAL placement.

If a couple enter the BH the only way to reach to the bottom is to fly down to the 3rd floor and move to the opposite site to find the second LAL to the 2nd floor.

If they still wanted to reach the ground floor they need to fly to the other side for the LAL.

This stupid design is not recommended.

My frank opinion is to locate the LAL at an angle where those new couples can fly direct from the top most floor to the lowest.

For this BH I will recommend to open a new LAL hole on the 2nd floor.  The old LAL will be used only for its staircase.

The BH seems to have quite a number of visitors but nearly all those markings on the floor were dried.

Nearly 30-40% of those internal sound tweeters were actually hosted at least a couple for a period of time.

Once they feel uncomfortable, perhaps due to the high temperature, they left the house.

The total number of internal sound tweeters were low, maybe around 60-70 a floor.

I recommended about 1-1.5 pieces per square meter.

The top most floor were with the most number of markings but all were dried which indicates that the birds have left the BH.

Another very standard thing that I discovered in nearly all sick BHs was that they external sound were allowed to be installed at the main entrance hole and the LAL.

Very rare I saw those with proper or more external sound inside the VIP rooms are on the door frame.

My conclusion about this BH are as follows:

1) Due to lack of knowledge about swiftlet farming, the owner did little to get his BH with double walled.  If he should have been a bit knowledgeable he can save a lot of money.

2) The so called contractor cum consultant is not sincere.  He took advantage of the poor owner who did not argue or foresee what will happen when a single wall is used.

3) The walls were wrongly constructed.  It should be double layer with a gap in between to block direct heat entering the nesting rooms.

4) The roof ceiling was not thick enough. Usually the final ceiling of a BH is much thicker as compared to the other floors below.  Since this last ceiling floor will be exposed to outside environment it is advisable to have it thicker or double the thickness.

5) The roof erected above the ceiling floor must be either to closed of the air circulation were restricted.  When your roof is too closed to the ceiling floor there is this think we called head radiation.  The heat will still cause the floor to raise its temperature and slowly creep to the BH.

6) The LAL  holes were not proper.  Current location will prevent any new birds to find their was to the ground floor.  The ground floor is the most conducive, cooler and darker and this is where most wanted to stay if allowed to. Any BH which experienced a heavy population on the ground floor indicate to you that the BH is with properly located LAL holes.

7) Properly located LAL will help to birds to find their way out of the BH during dawn.  This is where I keep telling you all that those morning light is a must for these wild birds to find their way out of the house early in the morning.

8) The entrance hole chosen was the top entry type and one side of the hole was facing the east.  This seems to be the only correct thing about this BH.  If given a choice I would love to upgrade this house and change the top entrance type to a Monkey house entrance.

9) The external sound tweeters were not enough and nil inside the nesting room.  The only place with external sound tweeters were the entrance hole areas and the LAL.  This is the old way and no longer suitable.

10) The number of internal sound tweeters were too little.  My method is to use this rule of the thumb like 1 square meter per tweeter.   Better still to raised the figure to 1.5 tweeters per square meters.  The most important locations to put more tweeters will be inside the VIP rooms.

11) There were a couple of half walls inside the BH but they served very little purposes.  They lack adequate purposes to block the light and make a room which I normally named VIP room.  This simple idea is more like a must in any BH.  Each floor need to be revamp and VIP rooms should be created.

12) The external sound tweeters at the entrance hole areas were not adequate.  This lack of tweeters need some attention.

13) There were no special gadget inside the BH to lure those birds to be a permanent resident.  No fake nests and etc.

14) The BH was very dry and the contractor did very little to install those humidifiers or even water pipes.  A BH without any water supply I think is not right unless your BH is inside a jungle will not pipe water closed by.

I hope the above observations and comments are useful to all those who own BH(s).  Remember I am not trying to blame the owner or the BH contractors but what I am trying to highlight is the key issues that you should not do during your BH construction.

Do not give the contractor do everything without any input from you.

For the sake of your heavy investment try to gather as much knowledge as possible or else try to appoint an adviser to help you with the BH design before to let the contractor to start building your dream BH.

If you do not follow the above advise you dream BH will soon turn into a nightmare BH.

After Some Time Waiting They Started To Come !!!

This BH used to have about 15 nests.

The owner wanted to give up and revert it into its original state.

She already spend so much to convert plus tried her B-I-L to remedy it.

(Her B-I-L owned a BH with 30 kg output per month).

It still was not moving.

Her last resort was to call Pak Harry after some due diligent works.

At first I was not very pleased with its location since the number of birds flying above the BH in evening was too little.

She soon pushed me to be a JV partner.

I think she is very smart.  She know that if I just convert there is no guarantee that it will be populated.

What she needed is a workhorse who can assure her result.

So after signing the JV agreement I became a "Horse".

Oh shit I was stupid for not thinking like her.

Anyway at that juncture I was looking for some BHs for me to carry out research especially in aroma and other products that I discovered.

If I hold a set of keys than I can do what I like.

Now I feel that she is stupid.

Okay if I was stupid and she is also stupid then we are even.

Anyway what make me very happy was to see this unusual activities where nearly all the birds flying above the roof will enter only into the JV Birdhouse.

It became a Power House.

My Latest Idea With Super Pheromone !!!

Feel great and glad after I received this very interesting "Viber" message:

"Hi Harry, we came in the BH today after 1 month and 10 days after  we used the pheromone (2X liquid).  The results were increase to 58 nests in total from 39 nests. Which means increased 19 nests in 40 days which was great result.  Dee "

This excited person is from Vietnam and have not been able to populate his BH for many years.

In November 2013 he Viber to me that knew me after he attended my Seminar about two years ago but still his BH is not doing well.

I conveyed to him about some new ideas and products that are well proven in Vietnam.

The best was the Super Pheromone.

After a long communication I managed to convince him to test the liquid pheromone.

On December 27 th 2013 he went to an outlet that sells the pheromone and tenali vinegar.

After applying the liquid the result within only 40 days the number of nests increased was more than a year before using the pheromone.

It was almost 3 years ago that I visited this mini BH but doing ok now !!!

 

(Back View Of ASPA Cottage BH)

Today visited this small BH located somewhere at ASPA cottage at Kuantan,Pahang, Malaysia about 3 hours drive from Kuala Lumpur.

This simple BH is only about 20 feet by 40-50 feet and 8 feet ceiling height elevated about 15 feet above the ground.

The BH is made of magnesium board (external walls) plus heat insulating cellulose and covered with normal cement boards (internal walls).

Its frame is made of steel beams.

It used to be empty or lowly populated and the owner invited me to view and make my recommendations. That was about three years ago....

The BH looks good but due to lack of proper knowledge of the contractor he engaged the BH was running at a tortoise speed.Very slow and most of the time stagnant.  (tortoise stop to eat or drink)

He was very lucky to seek my advise.

I lost touch with the owner for quite some time and I did not realized that he carried out my recommendation (not all of it).

Recently out of the blues he called and wanted me to meet him for some interesting project at UMP faculty of business studies. (He work at UMP at a senior Lecturer, Faculty of Business Studies)

I met him during my scheduled trip to Gambang and we chat about his future projects plus his BH.

I was very happy to know that he is looking at the same direction as I am on how to populate empty BHs.

He carried out research together with his fellow students who some are doing Degree and Masters.

What he wanted me to do was to help him to quick start his research works by offering my expertise, my time and my ideas on areas that will be useful to his team.

I was very proud to be invited and I told him that I will do whatever I can to help.

When I pushed the question about his BH status he smiled and replied that he did what I told him to do but not all but the result so far is outstanding.

"Tell me how many nests now?" I enquired.

"More than 60 and growing.  You are damn right about those bright light". he replied.

Prior to his revamp operation those birds choose only the back part but now with some doors being shut they are moving to new territories.

Only today I managed to enter and viewed what he actually did.

Due to the short length the BH have difficulties to control the light entering  from the main entrance hole.

I remember correctly what I asked him to do to get the right darkness and after moving some doors and closing some he managed to get the proper environment.

I told myself that the main reason why this BH owner called me back after such a long period of time was because my recommendation works.

If it does not performed I might already be a history in his address book.

He admitted that prior to my visit he was cheated by some wise guy who claimed to have a gadget that can make those bird sound soundless.

However today I added a number of additional things or recommendation that he needs his follow up.

One was to add a few external sound tweeters at all the three doors.

I was also not happy with the ventilation holes without any elbows and extended pipes.

When you stand inside at any corner of the BH with those light switched off I can see light coming from walls joints.  They look small but I insisted that he should fill them up with those cement fillers.

Many of those nests were used many times.  Some shown a kind of staggered nests and the  time is for him to harvest.

I introduced and showed to him how to apply the liquid super pheromone.

The best way to maximize the aroma is to brush a layer on all those new nests marking on all the nesting planks.

Those fake nests that are being used multiple times should be harvested and removed.

One interesting idea was to harvest and apply the pheromone on the nest markings.

His BH was getting very dry and you can easily see the nests shape.  They become uneven and wavy.  Some have a kind of gaps.

He need to look into the installation of a humidifier controlled by a auto sensor.

He was not very aggressive with the sound playing techniques. He played his external sound from 8:00 am till 10:00 am and from 5:00 pm till 7:30pm.

He was afraid of complains made by his neighbors.

So he loose the opportunities during 10:00 am till 5:00 pm about 7 hours window of missed opportunity.

I tough him a simple technique how to run the sound on a continuous basis but install a timer to blast a louder sound from 8:00 to 9:00 am and 7:20 pm till 7:45 pm only a single amplifier.

If he adopt all those recommendations I guarantee him that his nests numbers will double within 3-5 months.

He was very pleased with my help and I hope he will continue to look after his BH wisely.

If he needs my help I will be always available for him.

One thing that I wanted him to know that with the nests numbers there are many interesting research that can be carried out inside his unit.

Truely Honored When Someone Wanted To Drive Almost 4 Hours Just To See & Thank Me !!!

I am so honored and happy to hear from a blog reader residing in Brunei.

"Pak Harry I will be driving from Brunei to Kota Kinabalu on February 14th to see you.  My main reason is to personally thank you for all those thing that you have written and contributed to my swiftlet farming".

I could not find the right answer to tell him but appreciate his effort to come so far over to Kota Kinabalu.

Well this person seems to have digested all my postings and learned so much from it.

He now know why there are lots of feathers on the floor (one example).

He said he also now have a better idea on why those birds leave lots of shit at the roving area just after the main entrance hole.

What about the guiding tweeters to make those birds travel from the roving into the nesting rooms?

The idea of creating VIP rooms inside a BH is something no one have tough him.

He recently tried the "Super Pheromone" and it changed the total landscape of his BH nests population.

"I used to count the number of birds from the beginning.  It started like two, then 4, then 5 and so forth.  The moment I used your super pheromone they came by the hundreds.  Now could no longer count how many but the number of nests inside are exceptional.  Thank you Pak Harry and I really wanted to see you in person to convey my special thank you."

I Don't Recommend Planting Trees Too Closed To BHs !!!

I was observing the birds responding to my new external sound recently.

After a short moment I heard a kind of a "pop" sound as if something like a frog felt to the floor from a Banana Tree.

Hmm....I suspected something is causing the frog to jump down so I tried to located the culprit.

Well well well.

I suspected it has to do with a snake chasing the frog.

I was dead right.

This small green snake was after the leave frog.

The snake was small but what I am concerned about is the banana tree that was planted too closed to the the BH wall.

Just imagine if the snake decide to hunt her food inside the BH?

What do you think will happen if you have a snake as your permanent tenant?

Die loh !!!

Every other day the snake will consume one bird.

Sure die....

So if you own a BH try to be more sensitive to your BH possible invested with not only snakes but ants, squirrels, civets, and many other predators.

Try to make sure the tree leaves will never touch your BH walls.

What Happen If You Forgot To Switch Off Those Light Inside Your BH !!!

 

(Pipe Water Blocked Due to Rhino Beetle stuck inside water intake)

A very interesting observations during my recent BH visit in Melaka.

Before starting my journey I told the BH owner and ask him on any specific things that he wanted me to check while I am at his BH.

"Pak Harry I was there last weekend and I think the water from all the taps seems to be blocked.  The pool below the verandah is totally dried and the pond on the rooftop was also having little water."

"Please check on the humidifiers.  I think the one on the top floor was not functioning properly."

"The weather is hot now days and if the humidifiers function properly the BH can be cooler inside."

With the above information I drove to the BH, about 2 hours drive from Kuala Lumpur, and quickly inspect the BH.

The moment I arrived I saw this black water tank cover on the floor.

Hmmm it must have been blown down from the top most floor (roof area).

It never come to my mind that this might be the cause of water not flowing into the main pipe.

I opened the data room door and enter the room.

I did not noticed anything wrong inside the data room.

It was cleaned and tidy and all the amplifiers were working and those Hager timers are properly on the right timing.

The sound from all the three amplifiers were okay.

Now to inspect the floors.

The nesting room on the ground floors looks okay but the humidity sensor was a bit on the high site.

There were a number of birds flying inside the two VIP rooms.

The moment I reached the staircase area I realized that the middle floor was with it light on.

Oh oh.  Not a good sign.

Quickly SMS a message to the BH owner.

"Brother you did not switch the light off on the middle floor".

There was not a single birds on this floor.  The bright light must have irritate those tenants staying on the floor.

They must have moved to the other two floors or maybe flew out to another BH.

The key point here is that you need to be careful before you leave your BH and make sure all the lights inside are properly shut.

Beside those bright light I found that the humidifier on the 2nd floor was running but did not have any mist out of the machine.

Main cause was the machine keep running since the power supplied was regulated by an auto humidity sensor.

The sensor was set at 85%RH while the room was below 82% RH.

Main culprit was the water from the main pipe were blocked.  No water was flooding the water container below the blowing machine.

The top most floor was okay however it was a bit too dry.  This might be why the BH owner wanted me to check on why such thing happen.

I told him on the phone that the manual timer was not suitable.  I changed the manual to digital timer.

The pool below the verandah opening was totally dried and those green algae were dried and turned into cracked leaves.

But the water was not flowing.

The water pool on the top most floor was also with very shallow water level.

The black water storage tank was without any cover since it was blown to the ground.

While conducting the inspection I noticed some dead rhino beetle bodies floating inside the tank.  Some were on the base of the tank.

I used my hand to check the pipe opening and guess what.

I can feel the pipe was blocked by those dead beetle.

Opened up the pipe and managed to remove those dead bodies.

The water start to floor and I described to the BH owner the pipe clogging was resolved.

Water started to flow and the water system was back to normal.

The storage tank cover was the main reason why those beetles can enter the tank and when some of them died, their dead bodies block the pipe opening.

It was something that I managed to resolve but I reminded the owner to perhaps to come out with a list of things to inspect on every trip to his BH.

The number of new nests was up a bit but it would have been more if not because of the hot weather now.

Took about four hours to inspect, unclogged the pipe, reset the timers, apply the pheromone, wet the floors, change the external sounds and sprayed those insecticide.

Log my visit activities into the BH log book.

Looking forward for the next visit.

An Exciting 3 Weeks From Monday Feb 10th Till Perhaps Early March 2014 !!!

Got a number of calls and email from a number of BH owners this few days.

First was from a BH owner from Kuantan whose BH is in Lukut, Port Dickson.

Never met him before but he got my contact number from a friend, he said.

The owner wanted me to view his 3 stories stand alone BH with about 15 nests after three years into operation.

He wanted me to be at his BH on February 10th 2014.

My next interesting activity will be on February 11th and 12th, 2014.

Received a short message from a Local University asking me to join a kind of a "Swiftlet Workshop".

The first day will be participating in a talk on swiftlet farming and on the second day I will be taken together with the rest to view a BH.

The interesting part of this exercise is that most of the participants are students and lecturers from a faculty spearheading with research in swiftlet farming.

I told the person who invited me that I will be very happy to help in their research operations and hopefully their findings will be useful to the industry.

I plan to put a small presentation to them about what I called "Swiftlet Farming: The Neglected Industry".

My main aim is to stimulate a kind of interest on what can done to promote the industry like other industries example Fish (LKIM), Palm Oil (MPOB) and others.

Immediately after the two days I will be getting ready to fly to Sabah.

The first three days will be in Kota Kinabalu and there will be at least four BHs to be visited.

I have visited all the four BHs before but this stop over visit is to evaluate their progress and hopefully can provide some new ideas on how they can push their nests population up.

From February 17th till 19th 2014, I will be in Tawau, a town about 35 minutes flight from Kota Kinabalu.

There are three BHs that I scheduled to visit.

I have never visited the three before and I hope my visit report will be a good tool for the owners to do something about their BHs.

A newbie who wanted to start his own BH wanted my personal tips on how to be a successful BH operator.

On Feb 19th evening I plan to fly out of Tawau to Sandakan, about 30 minutes flight from Tawau.

There are at least 4 BH owners who wanted to meet me for a cup of coffee.

Out of the 4, one wanted my service to view his slow moving BH.

Once completed and return home I have to fly out to Kuala Trengganu to help 4 BH owners who have some difficulties to populate their BHs.

I am sure I will be exhausted after the third week.

The key point here is that there will be a lot of new stories to be written and share with all my blog readers.

What Else You Can Do To Boost Your BH nests !!!

Assuming that you have applied the "super pheromone" and your BH performance now is way better than prior to this, what else can you do?

I am talking about your next action plan.

After proving that those swiftlet in your area love the product and they keep coming in and populate your BH at a unusual rate, are there any other methods to get more of them?

My answer is yes but I cannot confirm my finding until March 10th 2014.

During the CNY I was a bit restless and wanted to try this idea that came to me about 2 weeks prior to the CNY.

What came to my mind was to install a diaphragm pump that is set to operate about three times a week.

This pump will suck the pheromone liquid and push it through about 10 spray nozzles.

The nozzles will be installed about 10 inches below the nesting planks.

Each time the pump operated it will push out about 1 liter of the liquid pheromone.

Every week I need to use about 3 liters.

If I should visit this BH three to four weeks from the installation I need at least 12 liters.

Hmm.... so I got into thinking of buying a container about 20 liters capacity and get about 5 liters of the pheromone and add about 15 liters of water.

That will last for at least 7 weeks.

The installation went well and I will inspecting the effect during my next trip to the BH.

Any good news will be shared with you all and if you happen to have a better idea please share with me.

Email your idea on how to apply the liquid pheromone inside your BH.

Once Proven You Need To Move Forward !!!

Once a product is proven you need to move forward with a bit more aggressive installation.

I am referring to the nesting planks aroma the "Super Pheromone".

Usually for a new users I will introduce the pheromone in canisters.

Minimum numbers for evaluation purposes is at least two.

Apply this special products as follows:

1) Spray onto those new markings made by your tenants.

2) Combine its use with the installation of fake nests.  Once you have installed the fake nests spray the pheromone on them.

3) If your BH have a lot of those 90* corners, spray on the joint.

4) If you own a BH and wanted to harvest your nests, try to spray onto the marking or base left on the planks after your harvest.


Try to count the number of nests before and after you applied the pheromone.

If the number of nests suddenly serge you know that those swiftlet species love the smell of your pheromone. 

Once this is confirmed, the specie of swiftlet in your area is attracted to the pheromone, I recommend that you move to the next level of using the pheromone.

The best would be to switch the pheromone from canister type to the liquid type.

For initial trial get about one liter of the liquid pheromone.

The recommended method is to chose the best place in your BH example one of the VIP room.

Clean the plank with water laced with vinegar or salt and let it dry.

Once dried apply the liquid pheromone on the cleaned surface using normal brush.

You can either apply one layer or two layers.

If you want to apply two layers make sure you allow the first applied layer dried up.

Within the next few weeks you might have a much better result as compared to before doing this.

So what should you do after this?

My suggestion is to move to a much aggressive application of the pheromone.

You might want to apply the liquid pheromone inside other VIP rooms inside your BH.

Do it on a larger scale and with luck your BH will be able to attract more birds to enter and stay.

Preparing My Trip To Kota Kinabalu, Tawau and Sandakan, Sabah !!!

After a long CNY holidays I am back in Kuala Lumpur.

My plan now is to look at my itinerary to visit Sabah.

Hope the planned schedules are not too tight.

The first three days from Feb 14 - 16th, will be in KK.

Once arrived will visit a wooden BH that I visited a few months back.

The owner wanted additional ideas on how to improve the nests population.

It used to be having little nests (below 10) and after my first site visit I wrote a full report on what he should do the nest number went up to more than 100 nests.

That was an achievement.

What I told him to do now is to push the nests population to at least 200 within the next 12 months.

He wanted it badly and I offer my service to carry out another inspection and perhaps list down a few new things for him to do.

I am sure with the new ideas he will be able to reap the benefits within the nest 12 months.

I will also inspect another BH on a hill whose owner removed nearly all those styrofoam fake nests.

According to him the number of nests seems to hover around 200 and not moving much.

This would not have happened if he did not remove those fake nests before the total number hit at least 300-500.

Perhaps I can suggest something new for him to push the nest numbers up.

On 17th morning will take a flight to Tawau for three days stay.

Main reason is to meet up with two blog readers who wanted me to view one BH.

I hope to evaluate his BH problems and perhaps make some recommendations on how to get the BH reactivated.

On 20th morning will take my next flight to Sandakan, Sabah.

Another person who have tried using the super pheromone wanted me to improve his BH.

There Is A Snake In This BH !!!

Another white skin left by a snake in a BH.

This was my second time finding the skin on the floor.

I remembered about 6 months ago there was one similar and I managed to remove the snake.

This time around I was not able to find where this snake hid.

A good lesson to learn from this scary finding is that I need to carry a stick when entering any BH for inspection or routine maintenance.

It is nice to carry one so that you can quickly act upon finding any predators inside.

One common predator that you can catch would be those Tokek lizard.

I came accrosed a number of times.

The stick will be valuable to restore order in the BH.

These two predators will usually scare away your new birds and at the same time might cause your young baby birds will refuse to return home.

I will either catch those predators or eliminate them for good.

So on your next visit to your BH be observant and carry a stick with you.

The Elevated VIP Room Idea Combined With Dual Entries Is Working !!!

I remembered visiting a number of BHs where those birds love to populate those nesting planks that are higher as compared to the normal locations.

They seems to prefer those that are at the staircase areas when the height from the nesting plank to the floor is the tallest or highest.

What I concluded was that these high places gave them a longer period of falling down during their copulation period.

Yes one of their favorite activity during making love is when the male make grab the female bird and they drop down from the ceiling to the floor below.

When they are about a few feet above the floor they will disengaged and fly back to continue doing the same copulation technique.

Yes it is during this falling down activities the male will penetrate the female but not all the time.

If this activity is done at a location where the floor is much deeper they will have more time to copulate.

This was where it hit my mind that if you should provide them the right design, elevated  ceiling, they might prefer to stay there.

About four years ago I came out with this design and managed to erect one for my research.

Now after about two years my hypothesis is right.

I was visiting this Karak BH and during my short visit on the top most floor I observed that those birds were hovering and sticking to the nesting planks where the elevation was higher.

Nearly all 90* corners were taken and I am sure this location will be their favorite nesting areas.

I am of the opinion that these interesting design combined with the dual entries system is one of the important key to populate your BH.

No one have came out with these interesting ideas but something that is beneficial should not be ignored.
