I always thought that each nest will have only two eggs.
But I was wrong. A matured nest may have three but in some occassion there is only one. What if I tell you that there are some without any ???
This is what you should know.
When a birdhouse is being harvested using a forced harvest technique, some owner might harvest when the birds have yet to lay the second egg. Also in the case where your BH being bugalurised and they take away all the nests.
The female birds, with one more egg to lay, have little choices but have to lay the other egg in her belly in any nest that are without any resident, at her labor time. If the real nest owner comes back home with one extra egg in her nest, she will end up with three eggs, two hers and one someone else.
There are also cases where they couple have only one egg. Two main reason. The other egg must have fallen down or this female is already at her final monopause age. She can only produce one egg. This happenned when she is about 12 years of age.
Those nest without any eggs but have birds staying in them, are usually nests made to call home but not for laying eggs. This is nothing unusual in swiftlet colony. You will ask why but I am not telling you.... Just observe this unique thing and you will get use to it .....
