What Can Go Wrong After The Birds Enter Your New BH ???

You Don't Count those Chicken Before they are Hatched."

Remember this phrase?

In swiftlet farming try not to get over excited once you see some bird shit spots on the floor.

You know why?

If you are not careful and do not carry out the right maintenance, those birds will not initiate any move to build their nests.

Those birds will only be your permanent tenant once they lay at least one eggs in their new nest. This is applicable to new BH.

I was in Rawang the other day and visited a BH that was in operation for almost 8 months.  Initially the owner was very happy that after a few short months his BH was with bird shits spots in his nesting rooms.

The moment I we entered I told him that there is some weir thing about the bird shit configuration on the floor.

I was very sure that those birds were gone and for quite some time, I told him.

He was surprised and asked me: What do you mean they are gone?

If you look at the shape and the freshness of the bird shits, you can easily determined whether those birds are still coming home to the same spot to roost or gone with the wind.

What I did next was to ask him to switch the external sound on.

I told him that the most probable reason was those tweeters playing the external sound are no longer working.

He wanted me to proof  it.

The moment the amplifier being switched on, yep my guess was on the dot.  Nearly all the tweeters were not functioning any longer.

Please check those at the entrance hole.  If that is dead it is equal to a dead BH that you have been looking after.

The best lessons from this real life story  are:

1) You need to make sure those tweeters are in working conditions all the time.

2) Beside failed tweeters, you also need to check if all your amplifiers are working correctly.  Check their functionality and look carefully at those digital timers.  Make sure those two fingers on the clock surface are accurate.

3) The biggest drawbacks will be those tweeters at the entrance hole.  If these are dead, you are not going to pull any new birds in and even those that were already in but have not build their nests will be gone.

I was not happy with the visit but told him not to give up.  There are plenty of swiftlet out there and he can bring in if he can be more active in carrying out the bi monthly maintenance operation.
