Pak Harry, what other things, beside a good sound, can bring those birds into your entrance hole?
I was often asked on any special gadget that can increase the number of birds entering a BH entrance hole.
My answer will be as follows:
1) First you need to ensure that the entrance hole is big enough. For a new BH, remember a new BH, I recommend a minimum size of 2.5 feet by 3 feet. Better still if the hole can be widen to 3 feet by 4 feet.
My reason for having such a big size is to make those young birds not scared in entering your new BH.
You also need to remember that about 6 to 8 inches of the width will be taken up by those external sound tweeters. If your entrance hole with is only 2 feet (24 inches) you will have some part that will be 24-8 = 16 inches wide.
Yes once your BH nest population reaches say 300 you might want to reduce the size to 2.5 to 3 feet.
2) The external sound tweeters arrangement at the entrance hole must be well placed. First you need to ensure that the tweeters size selected are not too large. If they are too large it will cause a constriction thus causing unnecessary inconvenience to those wild birds.
I normally recommend to install two tweeters on the top lip and two each on the left and right side frame of the entrance hole.
My reason for having two each is to balance the sound plus minimize the chance of any failure. If one of the two failed the other will become the back up.
3) Try to install a small bazooka, stainless steel horn, with one bullet shape round tweeter. This is something new and after trying at Subang2 BH it will be my new standard gadget. I prefer to install two, one on each side of the entrance hole frame.
This new gadget seem to give an extra power in pulling those young birds into the entrance hole.
Nearly all those birds that fly near the entrance hole will be easily pull into the entrance hole. For some reason the sound it produces do excite those birds to enter the house.
The gadget is not very expensive, about 180 rm, but the effectiveness is phenomenal.
I can safely says that if you follow the above advises you will get those birds into the entrance hole. Make sure the bazooka's mouth face outward towards the sky at about 30 to 50 degree up. Do not face the nozzle to a residential house nearby.
Remember my word: Those birds will enter your BH entrance hole.
I did not say that the birds will come in to stay but I said they will enter your BH entrance hole.
If you wish to try you might want to place your order by sending an email : Stainless Steel Bazooka Enquiry.
Minimum number per hole is two. One on the left and the other on the left.
You need to have some wires to prevent those birds from entering the mouth of the bazooka. Once entered they will be caught and there will be lots of dead birds within a few days.
