One of the most important aspect in designing your birdhouse is the issue of Safety. Safety cannot be compromised
On many occassions I heard that there have been mishap like owners falling of their ladder while conducting their birdnest harvesting. On one occasion the owner fell from the ladder and died without anyone to hold the ladder and worse when he went in the house alone.
There are other who were looking up and moving backward without realising that there was a hole in the house. Once they fall down, the result is fatal.
I also make observation that birdhouse owners tend to cut corners and do not spend money to build safety railings along the stairs connecting one floor to the other. Can U imagine walking upward and downward on a 5 stories building, in semi darkness on staircase without any safety railings?
My opinions on safety inside any birdhouse are as follows:
1) For every floor the owner should install enought light to be used during harvesting and inspection. It would be advisable to have a two ways switch to switch on and off before and after U move from one floor to the other.
2) All holes used as bird flight path from the top floor to the lowest floor should have protective safety railings to prevent any one from falling into the holes.
3) The interconnecting floors must be equipted with proper staircases with safety railings to prevent any mishap during visits to the birdhouse.
4) Each floor should have a proper light weight ladder to be used during birdnest harvesting. Ladders that are damaged and without proper security fetures shall not be allowed to be used while harvesting.
5) U should never visit the birdhouse alone. Have someone to accompany U so that if anything should happenned to U he can report to the authority concern or take U to the hospital.
6) Water hose used to feed water to your humidifier must be tighly secured to the humidifier. Do not allow them to leak onto the floor. Any leakage will result in slippery floor which is dangerous to you.
7) It is advisable to regularly collect birdshits from the house floor and place them in suitable containers. If these containers are full, remove them outside or use them as fertilizer. The floor can them be cleaned with water. Make sure these water can be drained out of the house.
I hope the suggessions given are usefull and if U have more to add please email to harryswiftlet@yahoo.com

Harry,
I am truly please to see that you have emphasized the safety aspects of BH.
Many just go for pure profit motives whilst totally ignoring the more valuable lives.
I am glad that my BH has all the safety features you mentioned.
