I was in SPatani and driven around for a special visit to some of the best birdhouses there.
While in the car, my guest posted this question to my SpSifu: " What is the most damaging pest to your birdhouse population?"
His answer:
There many types of pests that will attack and destroy you bird colony staying in your house.
Most common are:
1) Bird of prey (Barn Owl, Crows, Hawk)
2) Gecko ( house Cicak, lizard)
3) Snakes (They eat the baby birds and eggs)
4) Coachroach (They eat the Nests)
5) Red ants (They attack the baby birds & eggs)
6) White ants (They attack the wood frame)
7) Rodent (house mouse)
Among all the seven he mentioned, the biggest culprit is Rodent especialy house mouse. Once it start to eat the bird chicks and the eggs, it will destroy nearly everything within a very short period of time.
It was also observed that rodent tend to kill the birds and their chick for the sake of killing. They are nasty and if U see lots of birds parts or dead chicks in your birdhouse floor, U know it is caused by these rodent.
Other pests will take a long time to kill your tenant, but rodent do it in a quick way.
So whenever U inspect your birdhouse, do inspect for any sign of rodent attack by looking for clues where there are lots of dead birds n chicks and body parts especially legs on the floor area.
