The Signs That Will Tell You That There Is Not Enought Food For Those Swiftlets !!!

This important information was discussed in Lumut, Perak while attending a "Workshop" held by Perak JPBD. I was invited to be one of their speakers and group leader.

"Harry, the bird size in Setiawan now are smaller as compared to those days when the number of BHs are much lesser then now. They are nearly half the size of what they used to be."

Hmm........ a very interesting story which I love to dig so that I can inform my blog readers.

You mean before this they were much lager? What do you think the main reasons?

"Yes Harry those days the body size are bigger and with large body size they will built larger nests. Now their nests are very small. Main reason being the food sources are diminishing or not enough to support the ever growing colonies."

"May I add something that I came across when I visited Surabaya, a few years back. "

"There was a sizable BH which during its peak time the owner harvest about 40 kilograms a month. Now the same house can only collect only 4 kilograms. So what do you think are the cause? He lost 36 kilograms per month. The birds, he believed, migrated to other locations since the food source were not enough to support their food requirements."

I am sure this will happen to all of us one day. Those birds, when their food are not adequate, have little choices but to migrate to other more attractive locations. This is a nature and we cannot stop them.

The only way to reduce this risk, I supposed, is to start looking at providing them with food. Yes you might need to look at all the methods available to produce fruit fly or any other insects for them to eat.

You need to at least know that you can push them to stay a bit longer if you provide them with some incentive to stay with you.

It might sound stupid but providing food for those precious swiftlet are nothing new. There are many articles in those swiftlet books written by well known swiftlet scientists who reminded BH owners that providing of supplementary food can help to improve your BH birds population.

So from now, I suggest that you need to open you mindset and start learning about how to introduce those insects for your birds occupying your BH. Who know one day you might want to opt for your BH.......
