(Tested with Kingkong External Sound and there were a small crowd)
I was in Ipoh, Perak today ( April 29th 2011) for a short visit to a newly converted BH who seems to have difficulties in getting those wild birds to enter the main nesting room.
One of the most spectacular about this BH was the amount of effort being put into the nesting planks installation.
The owner decided to use those 4 steps condor design and there were at least 8 to 10 valleys on the roof.
Very well done and lots of effort were put into the fixing of those nesting planks however due to some design error of the entrance hole, the roving areas, the tweeters positioning and the entrance door precise location the birds have difficulties in getting into those nicely done nesting room.
One observation made was the monkey house entrance hole direction.
I stayed till 7:30pm and I was surprised that the "Sifu" did not bother to check the flight path of those birds.
Accidentally I met him for tea and I could not make any comment to these young men who have very little knowledge on the dos and don't of the monkey house.
I was there to evaluate the BH problem and how I wish these young men will put more effort in doing the right sort of things in the future BH construction.
The most critical observation made were as follows:
1) The monkey house design was not proper. In the first place the main entrance hole direction should have be properly thought of. Please observe the birds flying path and try to allocate the main entrance hole facing them coming home.
2) There was no additional gadget to pull more birds to the monkey house roof top. The use of those hexagonal tweeters should have been included in the design. Without it you will be having one direction where the sound will be going towards. What happen if the birds are flying at the back of the monkey house?
3) There should be more then one entrance hole at the monkey house. There should be the main entrance hole and perhaps a hole that faces the east or maybe a hole that faces the water pond and so on. The idea is to provide the maximum free passage for those birds to enter the roving room.
4) The tweeters around the entrance hole window or doorways should not be fixed directly onto those wood frame or cement walls. They should be attached to those steel band and when fixing onto those areas should be able to allow them to be adjusted to face the birds flying path from the open space into the nesting room. I was trying to adjust the tweeters at the second window but was dissappointed that the "sifu" screwed them directly onto the wood.
5) The roving tunnel was a bit too narrow and when analyzing those birds flying pattern they seems to have difficulties to find their way inside the nesting room. There must be a better way to get them inside the house.
6) The conering from the tunnel into the nesting room was a bit too sharp. I might want to recommend the door to be relocated.
7) Internally there was no VIP room and the BH smell was a bit polluted with those rotting pineapples. I prefer the smell of those fresh bird shits.
8) The type of internal sound used was not proper, I told the owner. They were more towards those noisy colony noise where I prefer those baby or mating or the combination.
9) The external sound used to be very good but after about 5-6 months they have very little effectiveness to pull the attention of any of those wild birds.
The revamp works need to start as soon as I can get my workers finished the Semenyih BH.
I think there is a potential here but I cannot guarantee a large number of birds coming in.
