I was recently asked to inspect a BH that has about 400 nests in the state of Selangor.
"Pak Harry, the nest population seem to stop for almost one year and we cannot understand why. Can you give us some clue?"
I will never decline if some one invite me to inspect their BHs.
There are so many things that you can observed and learned from each visit.
Every BH have things that are peculiar and it is up to you to be very observant to get them into your book.
This BH was at about 500 meters from the main road and have been in operation for almost three to four years.
Not bad that within 3-4 years the number of nests is 400.
Why suddenly the nest population stop growing?
If there are 400 nests, every cycle there will be at least 800 young birds. Every year there should be a minimum of 800 young birds X 3 cycles = 2400 young birds.
Where have they gone to and why they refuse to stay?
My biggest challenge is to find the possible reasons.
Among all the findings, I informed the owner that his BH floors were too clean.
It seem that his employee clean the floor regularly and removed all those birdshits away from the BH. Some were fermented for aroma preparation while the rest were used as, I believed, as fertilizer.
My advise to the owner is try not to remove these birdshit away from the house. These birdshits produces those special smell, mainly ammonia, that makes those birds feel at home.
The best thing to do, I told him, was to put them into those containers. The blue bostik containers will be good enough.
Collect them and place them into those containers and never take them out of the house. If these containers are full then you might want to empty those that are already full and start refilling them.
Fresh birdshit are better as compared to those old one.
Good BH, I mean birds love to stay, are those that have a very pungent smell that comes from those birdshit decaying.
I have entered so many BHs and my observations conclude this finding.
"Do not trow away those birdshits but keep them inside proper containers for easy handling. Let the decaying aroma makes those birds feel peaceful and quickly multiply."
