What You Need To Learn From My Setiawan Trip !!!
While in Setiawan, Perak, I visited a number of BHes with Mr.D.
One of his BH was having more then 1,800 nests and it was only a 2 stories high building located in the center of the town.
I was very impressed with some of the techniques used to cover the corners, the home made nest checking mirror, the water pool in the nesting areas and of course the three stories high entrance tunnel.
Corner Covers:
What Mr.D did was not to install any corner covers in his BH until the swiftlets hatched their eggs and the babies flew away. Upon harvesting the nests, he will then install the corner covers. What he uses was stainless steel plates that was about 1mm thick and with the dimension of about 40cm by 15cm. He will get ready with two holes to be used when attaching to the nesting planks.
The whole idea is to let the swiftlets choose where they like to begin their nests and let them multiply to the maximum. Once they have used the same corners for more then two times, Mr.D will harvest and place the stainless steel plates as his corner covers. Since the plate is very thin (1mm thick), the next nests laid on the same corner will be little affected and looks very much like a normal shape nests.
A brillian ideas that I advise all my blog readers to adopt.
Nest Inspection Mirror:
Mr.D design a very nice nest inspection Mirror that is practical and can be easily used in a dark room.
He uses a stainless steel frame with suitable wires in a loop shape together with a mirror holder, a small torchlight and a long aluminium pole (telescopic).
He joking said that he patented the design and allow me to be his distributor, if I wish to......
Each unit is available at RM 180 .....Minimum period of order is 2 weeks.
Internal Pool:
In keeping the nesting room humidity stable, Mr.D have his BH lined with small pool around the wall area. The pool is about 2 feet wide and about 1.5 feet height. The pool is flooded with water and covered with planks to avoid birdshits falling into the pool.
This is another good design features that you need to consider when designing your BH. The whole idea is to consistently have a pool of water that provide the humidity required to regulate the working of your humidifiers.
The pool is also a good source of aroma for the whole room.

Hi Harry! Talking about the stainless steel corner plate. Do you have any idea of where to find reasonable priced stainless ready cutted steel corner plate. I used to search around, i found cutting cost a lot that make it too expensive to use stainless steel corner plate. Thanks!
Weilian,
I took one sample from Mr.D and let me sent to a workshop around my area. Let see if the price is reasonable.
Alluminium is also okay.
Will come back to U.
