Some Strange Things Inside A BH !!!

While working on the Kuantan BH I was asked by a new BH owner to inspect a BH she owned and operated for about 1.5 years with little nests.

I took some time off to drive down to he unit and as usual the BH was with two to three nests.

The BH was somewhere in Gambang, Kuantan and it was a DIY unit.  Three stories and the nesting planks were double stacks.

There were plenty of unusual things to see but these were something interesting:

1) The owner used a DIY humidifier system using a 12 inch exhaust fan blowing onto a big pail of water container.  There were at least 4-5 units per floor.

2) The ceiling planks were with double stacks.  The strange thing was that the crossing were only at the lower layer.  There will be a big gap between the ceiling floor and the crossings.  It seems that the three nests were build on the top of this crossing.

3) There were plenty of cockroaches in the house.  I can easily says that there were at least 50+ running away from me when I was carrying out the inspection.  I think they must have eaten away at least three to five nests until there were no marking left except of those bird shit spots on the floor. Beside plenty on the floor there were also many hiding behind those nesting planks.  Their droppings can be clearly observed on a number of corner joints on the ceiling.

I think the BH needs a very urgent attention in pest control.

4)The entrance hole was with no hexagonal tweeters and adequate external sound tweeters to pull any of those birds into the BH. I wonder the amount of knowledge this BH owner has.

5) More then 20% of the ceiling planks were attacked by fungus.  This can be due to low quality wood used combined with too much water in the air.  Something that cannot be avoided but there are a number of fungus killer readily available in the market.

6) The amplifiers used were still the old type using car CD players hooked onto those low quality amplifiers.  All the setting on the amplifiers were not proper and wrong.

7) The number of tweeters in the BH was average but could have be betters.

8) There was no room to allow the birds to feel safe. Usually I will recommend the erection of one partitioning to create those VIP room.  It should be at the far end of the building and should not be more then 15 feet wide.

9) The owner have focus on one or two floors and not three.  Most people tend to be very greedy and they have these vision that their BH will be full within two to three years.  My idea is to try to focus on the most two floors first.  If the two floors are well occupied than you expand to the lowest floor.
