An Interesting Neglected BH With More Than 305 Nests !!!

"Pak Harry, I need your help to visit my recently purchased BH and please let me know what do you think the potential of increasing the number of nests?"

That was the word from a newbie who happened to purchase a BH with about 300 nests in it.

This newbie was a brave man and with lot of spare monies.  He purchased the BH with basically no inkling idea on how to manage a BH. Every body that knew about his new venture told him that he was crazy but I assured him he that what he bought is a gold mine.

I make my way to Setiawan, Perak, two days ago, just to look into his request.

The house was in the middle of the old town area and not far from this there were a number of successful BHs with not less then 10 kilogram of nests harvested every month. To be exact these are his next door neighbors, one on the left and the other on the right.

My main intention was more towards having a  good chance to evaluate a matured BH with more then 300 nests in it.

Once visited I will be able to determine what can be done to improve the number of nests in it.

These are the evaluation made after having a good look at the BH:

1) This three stories shop house have been in operation for at least 4-5 years.  The two top floors were converted into BHs while the lowest floor was tenanted to a food court.

2) The unit was sandwiched in between two sizable BHs.  Each unit consisted of not less then two block of shops.  Both were harvesting not less then 10 Kilograms each.  This works out to be producing more than 14,400 young birds every four months. One year there is a potential of 14,400 X 3 = 43,200 young birds.

3) Beside the neighbors the affected unit also can produce not less then 305 nests X 2 babies per nest X 3 times a year =1830 young birds every 12 months.

4) The nests population as compared to the nesting area now is only about 2.38%.  There are lots of rooms for another 12,495 nests.

5) The BH was actually neglected by the previous owner.  This can be clearly seen from the conditions of the sound system, the number of cockroaches, the dry floors and the number of tweeters in working conditions. One of the amplifier was totally dead and luckily I carried one unit for standby.

6) If the BH is properly looked after I told the owner that he has a very high potential of doubling the nests population within less then 12 months.

7) The nests were mainly on the top most floor (217 pieces) and some on the 1st floor (88 pieces).

8) While inside the BH at about 2:00pm there were not less then 50-60 birds hovering inside the 1st floor.  On the second floor the number were lesser.

9) The type of entrance hole was the side entry type and one interesting design was the use of those steel wire to prevent those owls from entering the house.  It looks well done and while inspecting the entrance hole there were many birds that flew in and out at ease.

10) The number of tweeters installed was less then 50 in each floor.  Nearly all the tweeters were with nest around it.  We need to add more to improve the nests numbers, I told the owner.

11) The house was very dry.  Nearly all those nests on the nesting planks were not well formed and not smooth.  There was no humidifier on any of the floor.

12) The were plenty of cockroaches inside both on the nesting planks and the floor.  I told the new owner to spray those Fendona insecticide as soon as he can to eliminate these no back bone creatures.

13) The nests seems to be concentrated on those 90* corners with corner covers installed.  Not suprising they loved the corners located on the wall perimeters not in the middle.

14) There was no room on both floors.  There potential of  pulling those young birds at the back of the floor by using VIP room concept is very strong.

As far as I am concern the owner have got himself a very good deal and if he is knowledgeable he can easily double the nests numbers within less then 12 months.

I was there with a friend who have offered him 1.1 million ringgit if he can double the nests numbers.
