If you owned a piece of land and it has been laid idle for many many years you should think whether it could be converted into a money making machine.
One day why finding my way in Kuantan, Pahang I was waiting for the traffic light to turn green when I saw this advertisement saying:
"If you own an idle land let us turn it into Gold. We specialized in Swiftlet Farming."
It tickle my mind a bit but the guy who have chosen the phrase has a lot of ideas and he was brave to have placed the advertisement on his shop's bill board.
Yes I think the time have come what these idle land should be, at least tried, converted into something that can help the swiftlet industry.
If the land is big enough the best is to look into turning it into a swiftlet Eco-park. Minimum is one and half acres but preferred is two acres.
Before you do that, as usual, you need to check the land's swiftlet farming suitability.
First would be the type of land. A flat land near to a water source will be your top most priority.
The second priority would be the number of birds responding to a bird call test. The higher the better but minimum should be at least 200 birds in Peninsular and 50 in Sabah and Sarawak.
The third observation is their flying path. If your land is closed to a successful BH or a "Walet Central" you might have a chance that those swiftlet are flying over your piece of land every morning and evening.
The fourth will be the distance between your piece of land and the town areas where you know there are plenty of birds staying. The closer to it the better since the bird density will be higher if the land is very closed to the town or a very successful BH.
The fifth consideration is to be as closed as possible with a water source like a lake or a slow moving river. If you don;t have one you need to plan in creating them. You can actually dig them to about 7 feet deep.
The sixth shall be the food source. When I say a food source I mean those areas where insects are generated for these swiftlet to eat. It can either be those closed to a virgin forest or a padi field or secondary jungle or lakes or rivers. It will be nice if you have all of these around the piece of land.
Once you have all these values you can think of a way to get some finance source to transform the land into an Eco-park.
You might need to change the land title but that will not be necessary during the early stage of development.
All you need is to start planning on how to maximize the land usage so that within a few short years you will be able to transform the idle land into something that can be worth millions.
This will be something that you should look at doing, a swiftlet farming ecopark with man made water ponds. (Sorry the picture is a bit not clear).
Each two units, have its own water pond to provide those birds with water and food (insect). The pond will be specially made with proper depth and fixed with suitable bed to breed marine insects. For the first few months the water will be treated with "Mayfly" and other marine insects eggs.
Beside the water pond features you can also include those insect generating barns. Each BH will have their own insect barn at the end of the building closed to the open tunnel.
You will need an area to store the insect generating powder plus mixing them up. A separate cabin might be good for that.

Total land area is about 2 acres and you can have up to 10 units of double or triple stories building.
Take note that this is just my own ideas or creation for one blog reader who owned a piece of land in Kuantan, Pahang.
He is looking at three stories building each but I prefer a two and half. That will be big enough to generate about 100 kg of nests once it is fully occupied.
