"Pak Harry, I am about to carry out my third renovation works on my birdhouse. The first renovation brought in only 15 nests and the second was 25 nests. Now my third. What is your advise?"
An interesting question posted by a new blog reader who claimed to be very busy with other things and his BH is not bringing in the expected results.
How many times should you renovate your BH in a year?
My answer to him is "Is it necessary? When was the last renovation works done?"
If you have designed the BH properly from the beginning you need not required frequent renovation works.
Based on my conversation with him, the birds did enter the house and they do multiplied but unfortunately not to the owner's expectation. His expection was very high because his relative in Kuala Krai, Kelantan got 400 nests a year. However his BH is in Selangor.
My advise to him was if the birds were entering and nesting but the number is slow, he should look at other possibilities.
It might be due to the external sound or maybe the internal sound.
It might be the internal temperature and humidity. Or it could be due to the BH internal odor.
There are 101 more reasons if I have the time to list.
What I told him to do is to monitor the exact number of new nests built every month.
After three months if the number is stagnant he should arrange to invite a knowledgeable person to take a good look at the possible reasons and get his recommendations.
Make sure the person he selected be some one who is sincere and serious in helping to populate the BH.
If the recommendations given make sense he should consider to follow the treatments but try to minimise any major renovations on the building.
Try not to do any DIY without proper advise from someone who is knowledgeable plus who can introduce new technologies into the building.
Ask him to check the brightness, temperature, humidity and those sound equipment using special gadgets that will be able to give him the most precise moment when the house is not within the recommended specifications.
They should be first attended to.
Then those sound that might not be suitable for the location. Both the external and internal need proper scrutinising.
Perhaps use proven aromas to make the BH attractive to those young birds.
Renovations should be the last option. Even if it is necessary, proper project implementation must be observed. You cannot allow your contractor and his workers make a mess of the BH until all those tenants move out.
Their working hours, their smoking habits, their cooking habits, their telephone ringing, the loud voice while working, and etc need to be carefully controlled.
Your main purpose is to populate your BH. Every single nests in the BH before the renovation works is worth 1,000. If all those permanent tenant moved out then you loose a fair bit of all those efforts that you have pour for the BH.
The best is think carefully before your carry out any major renovation and have someone who is knowledgeable to help is preparing the procedures before starting works.
