"Pak Harry, my birdhouse was wrongly designed. The nesting planks were too far apart. Should I revamp the BH and insert the additional planks? Currently my BH, about 6 months old with 20 nests."
This is a very interesting scenario where the house is new and suddenly you realised that there is something wrong with the orientation of the nesting planks or the gap between those planks are too big?
In the first place you should not have the house be in its operational mode if the house is not to your specification.
If you have the BH in operation and the birds are not bothered about those shortcomings, should you still proceed with the revamp?
My personal advise, just an opinion, not to carry out any revamp just for something that is not very relevant to increase the birds population.
In this particular scenario there are birds in the house, about 20 nests, and there are adequate number of planks to meet the increase for at least 24 months from now.
At the same time it is not the right timing to resort to a major works when the population are on the rise.
I would prefer the owner to focus more in increasing the number of nests. The revamp can be carried out a bit later or perhaps during dry seasons.
Dry seasons will be the time when most of the birds are flying much further to find food and this will be the best time to revamp or do major works in your BH. Make sure you do the job within 9.00am till say 4.30pm.
Increasing the number of nests during this time of the year should be the choice number one.
Get someone to help you in getting more birds to stay and let him gives you all the advise that will get the targeted number within 12 months.
Follow his advises and allow him to monitor the house progress so that he can fine tune your BH health.
You should be focused and move towards a reasonable target.
In the meantime learn as much as you can from him so that you can operate the house on your own.
