How To Keep Your Birdhouse Clean From Birdshits !!!

How do keep your BH free of those birdshits?

If you wish to maintain a fairly clean floor in your BH just trap those birdshit on a washable plastic mat and clean them on a regular basis.

This idea was given to me by a new blog reader from Klang, Mr.G.

His main aim is to contribute some of the things that he learned and wanted to share with my blog readers.

He always keep thanking me for a great job for blogging regularly and found that the amount of things that he learned is unbelievable. If he can learn so much he too wanted to return by supporting me with some tips that he accountered.

Hmm ..... very good and thank you very much for sharing.

What he was referring to is that you can actually get these mat that are sold in any grocery shops. I remember using them at my own house when I was growing up. They are durable, washable and cool to sleep on.

You can cut them into suitable strips like 3 feet by 2 feet and place them under those nests found in you BH. When those babies and parent shit they will fall down on the mat.

Once a month you can actually remove the mat with a new one while you clean and dry the dirtied piece. If you wish to collect the BH you can pour them into a pail and place them in the nesting areas. Please use rubber gloves when cleaning them.

A wonderful idea and see how to apply in your BH.

Thank you Mr.G for the tip.

I was adviced to just flush them down into WC.

Why not use old newspapers or padi straws to catch those bird shits. They can then be recycled into fertilizers for a good price.
Fertilizers are very costly nowadays. So please think about it.

Yong,

I managed to locate an example picture from nest tech website.

Ben,

You are right in suggesting the use of stray and old newspapers but they are tiduos to look after. The paper tend to be wet and rot . Similarly with those strays. They are not easy to carry around unless you already have a special machine to turn those straws plus birdshit to manure.

Well,I suppose this method is suited for pretty new BH with only a handfull of nests whereby the new owners are excited and enjoying the fun of doing it as new broom does sweep clean. But,how are you able to do it with a BH of having a few hundreds to thousands of nests inside?
I find it more practical and efficient to place permanently 4 to 5 pc of big plastic basins or containers with circumference of 2 feet X 10 inches on each floor. Each time after harvesting, scoop the shit into the containers.Until such time when full then transfer it into big rubbish bags.Transfer them to be sold to organic farmers or use them as fertiliser on your own estate.Don't throw away bit by bit.
As for the new BH with only a few nests, you can place these containers directly under the nests to collect the shit.No need to go through the hussle of cleaning them bit by bit.

Dave,

You are absolutely right. When you are a newbie you tend to be very concern over the birdshit but once you have a few thosunds of birds, you will have tons of shit to clear every time you visit your BH.

Well it is up to the individual to think for themself the best alternative. I just wanted to share some ideas tranferred to me by my blog readers.
