How Do You Count The Number Of Birds Occupying Your New Birdhouse ??

You have never thought about this before.

Assumming that you have activated those beautifull external sound and internal too.

At the same time you have apply those Aroma and you know that the birds have started to colonise your birdhouse.

You know that there are many of them because the number of birdshits clusters under those tweeters are getting more and more every month.

But how do you know the exact number of birds occupying your birdhouse?

Well there are many wild guesses but the best answer is to wake up very early in the morning, say 5.00 am, and be at the birdhouse ready with a video camera.

Make sure your video can take say two hours of pictures.

Set you video stand outside your birdhouse and zoom the camera to the bird exit hole.

The moment you see one bird flew out you activate the camera and let it tape for at least two hours, none stop.

Once you have finish the taping, you can run home and connect it to your TV and do the exact bird count by looking at the tape frame by frame.

Usually the birds will leave the house in the early morning to search for food.

Please be carefull since if the weather are good, wet, they tend to fly in and out of the exit hole. This action might give you a wrong number.

The best is to carry it out on a hot season, dry, where they tend to immediately fly far away from the house to reach their destination to find food.

Best of luck to all of you who wanted to do a regular stock take on the number of birds in your swiftlet hotel.....

Dear Harry,

Is there any eletronic trigger devices, which we can fix at the entrance hole for counting birds in & out? Taking video & counting infront of the TV is a hard jobs!

Enjoys reading your blog everyday !

Calvin,

You must be watching lots of those spies stories like Tom Cruise jutting around those beams to avoid detection.

Frankly the bird counting is good to be done when your house is new and you are making all the efforts to increase their numbers.

I have yet to come across any new technology designed specifically to count birds leaving a hole.

If there are, they might be very expensive..

To me the best is to use the video camera technique until such time there is a new gadget that we can use ..

Hi, there,

What about CCTV at the entrance hole ?

KL,

CCTV is more or less the same with video camera.

Frankly CCTV is a much preferred for those who opt for open roof concept. This is because you need to zoom the camera to the entrance door and not the roof top.

Only CCTV can do that since you can place the cctv on the appropriate site which can give the optimum bird count.

Thanks for your comment KL ..
