What do you think will happen if you allow those birds to recycle their old nests?
This very interesting question came from many of my Seminar participants.
Now let me show you one nice picture just taken from a BH whose owner left the nests for almost 2 plus years.
The nest seems to be taller then usual and growing towards the ceiling.
One day if the BH owner continues not to harvest, there will be no more gap for those birds to erect their new home.
The bird will stays until there is no longer space for upward construction.
Usually when these swiftlet recycle their old nest they will reinforce the nest foundation.
Some even erect a new nest above the old nest.
This is mainly due to the possibility of unstable nest foundation and these wild birds will not take any chances to lay their eggs onto an old nest without considering the possibilities.
Thye will build one layer after another during each breeding season.
This is why your harvesting operation do actually help those birds to rebuild their nest.
So don't feel guilty to harvest those nests.
You need to tell yourself that you are actually helping those birds to have a new stronger foundation homes.
If you think that I am wrong please tell me so.
